"What a great team I had. First Jim on electrical was terrific two new outlets each on their own circuit installed, very neat and professionally done. Next came the installation crew of Tim and Dan, these two are machines. They got right to work trenching the perimeter and then installing the drainage channel. "It’s been 5 months since Todd and his crew encapsulated my crawl space but I wanted to wait to give a comprehensive review of their services and the outcome of their work. The short answer is: I’m thrilled! Here’s the story: Last summer I bought a small home which has a crawlspace. As soon as the weather turned humid I noticed a distinctly musty/earthy odor. When I had central air installed, all it did was exacerbate the situation by blowing the air from the crawlspace all over the house. To say I was distressed is an understatement. I wasn’t sure encapsulation was the answer but after calling around and doing some online research there didn’t seem to be any other obvious solutions. While I had built one new house (full basement) and gut renovated another (slab foundation) I found myself in new territory with an older home (60s) and a crawlspace. Doug came in and did a consultation. I had a lot of questions and deep dove the technical details. I’m sure it was trying for both Doug and Todd, but every question I had was answered promptly and thoroughly (something other companies failed to do). I decided to go for a full encapsulation solution with a commercial humidifier, drain, and some underlayment in particularly rough areas. Todd (and his assistant Kyle) did outstanding work and every unexpected issue they encountered was handled quickly and professionally. When they found rotting wood forms that were left from when the concrete supports were poured, they pulled them out. When they found some rough areas of construction debris around the perimeter, they cleaned that out. And when Todd found some minor seepage in the corner of the crawlspace that he traced it to the outside where a downpipe was punctured and draining too close to the house, he went and bought some new downpipe and repaired it--charging me just for the materials. To say that these guys went above and beyond is an understatement. Any homeowner knows that feeling of having made a horrible mistake and I wasn’t sure the crawlspace issue could be fixed. Not only did Todd and his crew do an amazing job but they put me at ease throughout the process. They were punctual, tidy, thorough and just generally great to work with. I couldn’t recommend them more highly! (Now if only I could find other contractors who are just as good…) P.S. The other reason I waited so long to write a review is that in my particular situation, there is little separation between the air of the crawl space and the rest of my small house. So after it was first encapsulated, there was a strong smell of… well kind of a mix between plastic and dryer sheets. It was not terribly unpleasant but distinct and noticeable (and I’m very sensitive to smells). If anyone else experiences this, I recommend buying a large fan for the crawlspace and using it periodically to move the air from the crawlspace out of the house and move fresh air in. (I bought a cheap contractor fan that pivots upwards and put it on a smart home remote). Over the course of a few months it dissipated and I’m thrilled to report that I don’t notice it at all now."

"Our kitchen drain had been sluggish for quite a while. We finally called a plumber and were happy to find out he could come out within a few days. Just, as promised he showed up on time and was ready to tackle our plumbing problems. He and his son in-law are a two man team who work great together and are genuinely concerned about fixing any plumbing problems that exist. One of our plumbing problems was a stubborn clog that had settled in a sloping pvc pipe. They diligently worked on it until it was completely cleaned out. First they fixed the slope by giving it much needed support with braces and brackets. Then they worked on the clog. Once it appeared to be cleared out they ran the water to make sure the clog was completely gone,not just moved farther down.. I'm very glad they took that extra precaution because after they had run the water for about 10 minutes the water began to back up again. So they decided to cut through the pipe to physically remove the greasy, clog. They sealed up the pipe and tested the drain again for clear passage. Now the drainage in my kitchen sink is working better than it ever has. There is no build up of water. There were other problems that needed to be addressed and our real plumbers found a working solution for all of them. These two men are very knowledgeable and helpful in suggesting the best way to solve plumbing problems. And their suggestions are not necessarily the most expensive solutions, but rather the most effective. I would definitely call on them again. In fact several days after their visit, we did need them again. There was a problem that was NOT related to the clogged drain. As with the first visit, they came right out. They discussed the best way to handle the plumbing problem and fixed it at a very reasonable rate. We're glad we found "A REAL PLUMBER." It's good to know that a reliable, reasonably priced team of plumbers is only a phone call away."

After the first winter in my recently purchased 1870's vintage house, it was clear that the patchworked heating system, aging and inefficient, was a big problem.  Upstairs had circulating hot water, poorly installed.  Downstairs had old electric baseboards.  There are no ducts anywhere in the house.  What to do?  Call experts!  Several 'experts' then made proposals that fell short in a variety of ways.  
I met Matthew and Karlene Gucker, the owners of North Country PHC, at a home show.  They listened and told me they very much wanted an opportunity to make a proposal.  They followed up in writing to underscore their interest in my job.  As I had liked them immediately, I made an appointment and hoped they would deliver a quality proposal.  
Matthew arrived at the appointed time, toured my house, listened carefully to my goals, took his time and made careful notes.  Before departing, he told me in detail how he would address the problems I had identified, showed me some problems I had not seen with my inexperienced eye, and explained how he would address all my goals for this big job.  He even significantly reduced the cost of the job by salvaging the hot water circulating system by correcting the offending plumbing problems in its installation.  His was, by far, the best response I had received.  
He quickly followed up with a detailed written proposal that outlined the work, the equipment, the time frame and a meaningful breakdown of the costs.  
North Country removed one decrepit boiler and two very old gas water heaters.  In their place, I received one modern energy efficient combination boiler that heats the entire house, as well as provides potable hot water.  The upstairs hot water circulating system now works perfectly.  The old, offending plumbing that held it together is gone and new, properly installed plumbing has  it all working like a dream.  Downstairs, the house is heated by a radiant system that was readily installed from the basement.  The house is warm.  The boiler is silent and costs less than its predecessor to operate.  I have all the hot water I can use.  Mission Accomplished!
During the installation, one of the company's crew members was hospitalized.  No one could reasonably foresee this would happen.  Matthew and Karlene immediately informed me and ensured that it created no greater delay in my job than was absolutely unavoidable.  The communication from them both was excellent and the inconvenience to me was almost non-existent. They made sure I was never without heat or hot water.  The entire delay lasted no more than a few days.  For me, it amounted to no problem at all, but only because of the pro-active response from Matthew and Karlene.  This could happen to any employer at any time, but not all of them would handle it as well as North Country did.  Their attentiveness to the matter was excellent and much appreciated.
I always felt I was in good hands during this large job. My confidence never wavered that I was getting a great result.  I was rarely without heat or hot water, and then only for a matter of a few hours when essential, relevant work was being performed.  
I subsequently had other contractors in the house to perform some work unrelated to the heating upgrade.  I had to nudge them away from their enthusiastic examination of the work Matthew had done.  They were greatly impressed.  When the inspector from the local department of buildings came to review the finished work, he was also most enthusiastic about it.  He told me, "I never see work this good.  You got great work done here."  
Matthew has been back twice, at no cost to me, to check the work and make some small adjustments.  I don't know how this job could have been better.  Thank you, Matthew.  Thank you, Karlene.
