My specialties are welding at times and places most won't. My services include weld outside/ inside, all positions most thicknesses and multiple steels. I have experience in all levels and processes of metallurgy, including, but not limited to, gas cutting, plasma cutting, brazing, soldering, and Forging. I have been in the welding industry for over 15 years and like most welders, I began with stick welding. I obtained my welding course completion from DCMO BOCES at Norwich, NY campus in 2021 and have been welding professionally since. However, I was a hobby welder before that. I am the co-owner, founder and operator of "James'Metal Works" in Oxford, NY. I've been in business on and off for over a year now.

Welding questions, answered by experts

A steel beam is stronger than a wood beam and requires fewer vertical supports underneath, which means it’s a better option for larger structures or if you want an open space under your home that doesn’t have posts as obstructions. However, steel I-beams cost more than wood ones, and they can be difficult to install retroactively, as getting them into the basement area can be challenging, if not impossible.

Costs depend on material type, labor, design complexity, finishing requirements, and installation needs.

Yes, an LVL beam is more affordable than the cost of a steel I-beam, totaling between $50 and $200 per linear foot as opposed to the $100 to $400 per linear foot you’d pay for a steel I-beam. Not only is the wood material more affordable than steel, but it’s also more similar to traditional wooden beams and doesn’t require as much retrofitting to connect joists.

Steel I-beams are an increasingly popular choice for supporting a structure because they support a large amount of weight with a small profile and without the need for load-bearing walls or supports underneath. This allows for more open floor plans, which most people tend to prefer. They also resist fire, pests, and rot and last for the lifetime of your home.

The difference between a lintel and a beam is what loads each is responsible for supporting. A lintel is a type of beam that is responsible only for supporting the load above an opening, such as a window or door, and transfers the weight to the side walls around an opening. A beam supports the slab and transfers the load to nearby columns, which then disperse the load to the ground.
