"STAY AWAY if you value your time and belongings. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! There are much better moving companies out there. Believe all the bad reviews about Wheaton. BEWARE -> They will NOT pay insurance claims if you buy their insurance. Don't hire Wheaton if you are moving. They have been giving my family the run around, and failing to pay out insurance on $18,000+ worth of damages/lost items since last October, 2024 (8 months now) moving from CA to CO. They tried to blame everything on their local partner who has been fantastic to work with. There is photographic evidence everything was ok when it was loaded. Their driver also tried to charge me for additional/unused/unnecessary services on the day of delivery. They/I have all the documentation proving everything."

Piano Moving questions, answered by experts

Hire movers two to three months before your move-out date to give you enough time to compare rates, organize your belongings, and, most importantly, find a crew available for the exact day and time you need. You may find movers only one or two weeks ahead, but some companies require booking up to 90 days in advance. Consider the time of year, too—summer weekends book up fast, so plan ahead.

There are different types of moving companies, and you’ll want to look for one that has experience moving houses. Ask them how many houses they’ve moved, how long they’ve been in business, whether they coordinate all of the labor, permits, and subcontractors needed, and what their liability is for any damages incurred.

It’s rare to rent moving straps alone. Typically, you buy them outright. However, if you rent moving equipment, like loading tools or a furniture dolly, from a local or big-box business, they may come with moving straps for you to use.

Tipping movers isn’t mandatory, and most professional companies won’t expect it, but it is a nice way to say “thank you” and to show your appreciation for the care they took while handling your belongings. Tipping somewhere between 10% and 20% of your total bill to split among the movers is a good amount. Tipping is an especially good idea if your movers are working in the rain, snow, or excessive temperatures, if they relocate specialty items, like pianos, or simply if they go above and beyond during the process of moving.

Movers are very skilled in everything having to do with the moving process. From knowing which supplies and materials to use for certain items, to packing, to knowing how to efficiently load a truck, they have experience doing it all. And professional movers often do it all faster and more efficiently than a typical homeowner could.
