However, they're very simplistic and give general ideas for space planning. I was hoping to have a better idea for sizes of furniture for the space and some variations on staging. Jill was very responsive when I did have a question. I'm not sure how helpful it is to have a virtual design done. A standard bathtub can be used for soaking, but they tend to be shallower (between 15 and 18 inches deep). A soaking tub is designed to be deep enough to totally submerge yourself in the water (about 20 and 24 inches deep). Additionally, most soaking tubs are freestanding, while regular bathtubs come in various styles with drop-in, surround, and wall-mounted options available.
If you have an alcove in your bathroom, you don’t necessarily need to install an alcove tub. You can choose a drop-in tub and fit the frame to the alcove. This allows you to get a more custom or spa-like look. Think cultured marble or tiling for the frame versus the simpler look of acrylic or fiberglass with an alcove tub.
A good soaking tub will allow you to completely submerge yourself in the water, so it needs to be at least 20 inches deep. Luxury soaking tubs are 24 inches deep so that you can easily have enough space to be submerged in the water once the tub is full.
Alcove tubs come in fiberglass, acrylic, or enameled steel. Fiberglass is the most affordable but least durable, while acrylic is the highest-end and most durable (as long as you don’t go with a poor grade of acrylic, which will be prone to scratches). Enameled steel, where a steel tub is coated in a layer of porcelain, is a wallet-friendly middle ground. This material is highly durable but prone to chips.
