"Hired Humberto to strip a ton of old wallpaper and repaint our place in Tahoe. Two full floors, probably 2000 sq ft worth of walls. Wallpaper was everywhere and honestly I wasn’t sure what we were going to find underneath it, but his crew handled the whole thing: removal, sealing, knockdown texture, primer, two coats of paint by hand. Communication was great from the start. He called me the same day he sent the estimate and walked through his whole process which I appreciated since we were managing the project remotely. Humberto sent photos every single day as they went which was huge since we couldn’t be there during the work. Him and his crew were there every day and they finished right when they said they would. House looked great when we showed up for memorial day weekend. Clean work, no mess left behind. I would absolutely use Humberto again. He's my go-to paint guy in Tahoe now."

Wallpapering questions, answered by experts

No. If you overlap seams, the wallpaper will not come out flat. In addition to possibly throwing off your pattern match between rolls, overlapping seems necessary. If wallpaper is properly acclimated, and temperature and moisture conditions are optimal during installation, there is no reason to fear shrinkage as it dries.

If you can already see the texture of the existing wallpaper through the layer of paint, then the texture could also come through the new layer of wallpaper. If that’s the aesthetic you want, then proceed. But if you want a smoother surface, you should either strip off the existing paint and wallpaper or hang a layer of liner paper before proceeding.

Accent walls can feel out of place or distracting if not well designed. Accent walls that don’t fit in with a room’s style can feel jarring or overpowering. Some accent wall styles can also feel dated, but fortunately, it’s easier to update a single wall than an entire room.

You may end up with extra wallpaper once your project is finished. Hang on to that wallpaper, as you may need to use it to patch up areas that get damaged later on. If you have a lot of excess wallpaper, try getting creative with it. You can use it to line the inside of a cabinet or drawers, for example.

Having dated, peeling, or otherwise damaged wallpaper can decrease the value of your property, so removing that before listing your house is nearly always a good idea; however, since wallpaper tends to be a personal style choice, potential buyers may or may not love your aesthetic as much as you do.

Love the look of wallpaper but want to consider property value as well? Stick with something that is easy to change. If you are thinking of selling soon, make sure your wallpaper hanging is on-point and looks professional with no crooked seams, evenly matched patterns, and minimal bubbling or other imperfections.
