"When I was looking for a mold inspector in Santa Fe, Eric Tillson was by far the most professional of any I spoke to. By professional I mean he spent a great deal of time talking with me without trying to sell himself. I was interested in a particular mold test called an ERMI test and though it was not one he used himself, he took the time to research it and explained in depth how his method of testing could be combined with the ERMI to give me the information I needed. Do not be fooled by the fact that his company is new -- he has been in the business for a very long time and is extremely knowledgeable. Last but not least, Eric is a very kind man. I was extremely anxious about the mold in a house I rented and he could not have been more understanding and compassionate. Incidentally, he also does thorough cleaning of homes after (or before) remediation. I will definitely be hiring him to do that for me in the near future."

Mold Testing and Remediation questions, answered by experts

While mold in the bathroom can appear black, it isn’t always the dangerous black mold strain Stachybotrys chartarum. This type of mold typically appears after a flood or a long-term leak. If you suspect black mold, you should get it tested by a local mold testing service to determine whether it’s safe to remove yourself.

A stain from a water leak will usually be brown and concentrated in a single area where the water is originating from. You may find it under a damaged section of roof, under an upstairs bathroom, or beneath your HVAC system. Stains from condensation are more likely to be widespread since they don’t come from a single point of water intrusion. Condensation stains also look blotchy and may smell musty, and they won’t be concentrated in a single area on your ceiling.

The flooring that is the least toxic is solid wood. Natural linoleum, tile, stone, bamboo, and cork flooring also make the list of least-toxic flooring types. These flooring materials are safer and healthier for your home because they are natural materials that aren’t manufactured with chemicals, unlike laminate flooring. While some laminate flooring brands are made with less formaldehyde, many contain high levels of toxic chemicals that can off-gas in your home for months and years after installation.

Choosing natural flooring materials that are easy to clean without chemical cleansers can also help keep your home safer.

Mold in a basement is harmful as it can trigger allergy symptoms, especially for those with asthma and other breathing conditions. Symptoms of mold exposure include itching, sneezing, running nose, and congestion.

Mold is a blight on your home but over time, can be an extreme health risk, especially for immunocompromised individuals. Depending on the type of mold you’re dealing with, you could even experience neurological symptoms, or in extreme cases, you can be hospitalized. Even a tiny speck of toxigenic mold can cause a whole slew of very serious health issues. Deal with any mold issues immediately.
