"Aurel came to do a cleaning on wood burning fireplace in house recently purchased and repaired a crack on outside. After cleaning showed us cracks inside fireplace that needed to be sealed to prevent fire hazard, upgrade to flu and replacement of crown. Very honest in assessment, detailed in explanation and fair price. While his guys were repairing crown, also noticed cracks in concrete under crown which is where water had gotten in and caused original crack below they had fixed . Took pics and explained what had found and solution to seal with weatherproof compound. 2nd chimney on house recently redone by previous owner but concrete on top not done correctly and entirely crumbling so cleaned that up and poured new concrete. Also exhaust pipe not properly sealed. Gave me before and after pics of everything. I appreciate their thoroughness in looking at everything, not just job we had discussed. This saved us a lot of money down the road if damages on roof werenâ t caught now. They were on time, clean and professional. I would highly recommend."

"Al was fantastic! He clearly explained that my fireplace was shutting off as a safety feature due to low oxygen levels. He also reassembled the logs in the firebox and showed me the proper way to start and stop the fireplace. Highly recommend his service!"

"Albert gave me good impression immediately when he took off his work boots before coming in the house to check the fireplace/chimney. He didn't hesitate going up on the roof, unlike other company said they'll find out when they come to clean the chimney. Albert took pictures and explained to me repairs were needed. He answered my husband's questions promptly before we contracted him to do the work. Of course, we won't know for sure how good the flashing repair was until next rain/snow storm. By the way he offered to clean my stuck up gutters while he was up on the roof and later repaired my disconnected down-spout, I have confidence in his quality of work."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

This will depend on the size of the pellet stove and how much of the house you’re heating, i.e. just one room or the entire house. Many pellet stoves use anywhere from 80 to 345 watts of electricity per hour. In terms of the pellets, a 40-pound bag can cost $5 to $9. A bag of pellets will burn for about 24 hours.

You shouldn’t remove a fireplace yourself. Before beginning this job, you’d need to know whether or not you have a load-bearing fireplace. To do that, you’d need help from a structural engineer. Plus, fireplace removals require permits and often involve working with gas lines or electricity, which can be dangerous. For all of these reasons, it’s best to hire a pro for this project.

Wood-burning fireplaces typically make homeowners insurance more expensive, simply because they increase the risk for a fire in your home. Gas and electric inserts are less likely to bring up your insurance rates, but you should always speak with your agent to understand how installing any type of fireplace will affect your premiums.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says that chimneys and their associated elements like fireplaces, vents, or stoves should be cleaned at least once a year before the start of seasonal use. According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America, a chimney should be cleaned when there is 1/8 inch of soot buildup. If there’s more than that, creosote—a flammable byproduct of burning wood—can form and increase the risk of a chimney fire.

Pellet stoves are used as heat sources for homes. They work by burning biomass pallets, which might be composed of wood, sawdust, or food waste. The pellets are stored in the stove's hopper until the stove is ignited, at which point some are released into the stove's firebox to burn for heat. Unlike most fireplaces, pellet stoves have a thermostat that adjusts the temperature by releasing more or fewer pellets, depending on how warm you want to make your living space.
