"My neighbor got his front yard cleaned. Unfortunately, that service appears to have included yard work for me. They came onto my property, including my front porch, lawn and driveway with their leaf blower and "went to town". They blew tree seeds all over a dirt patch on my front lawn that had just had new grass seeds planted. They then blew all the grass seeds from my driveway to the grass next to the driveway and at the edge of my property. Picture green grass smothered in brown tree seeds."

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

Since the nature of the landscaping project can heavily influence the overall cost, it helps to understand what different types of landscaping projects cost on average. For example:

  • Plant a tree: $100–$2,000

  • Build a retaining wall: $3,250–$9,200

  • Reseed a lawn: $450–$1,700

  • Install a water fountain: $950–$4,800

  • Install a paver patio: $2,400–$7,000

  • Install a concrete walkway: $1,200–$2,400

  • Install a flower bed: $800–$3,000

  • Landscape lighting: $2,000–$6,000

Yes, a cubic yard of dirt will fit in most standard-size pickup trucks. However, consider the truck’s payload as well as the truck bed dimensions before loading it up with dirt. Soil can be quite heavy, and if the total weight of a yard of dirt exceeds your truck’s payload capacity, you risk damaging the chassis and suspension.

You should use mulch because it protects garden soil in a few key ways. This extra layer between the ground and the elements protects against erosion, helps your soil maintain moisture, regulates changes in temperature, adds nutrients as it decomposes, and keeps weeds at bay.

How tall your mulch should be around your tree depends on the type of mulch you use, but aim for 3 to 4 inches as a rule of thumb. You’ll want to avoid simply piling it up in hopes of offering additional benefits to your tree. Volcano mulching is the infamous term for piling way too much mulch against the stem of your tree. This could actually kill your tree or severely harm it, as your tree trunk needs space to breathe without too much moisture.

Small gravel is the better option since it creates a stable, even surface that’s easier on paws and hooves. Large gravel can be uncomfortable and may shift too much underfoot. So if you’re using gravel in pet or livestock areas, go for smooth, rounded small gravel to prevent injuries and discomfort.
