"Excellent. My deck looks brand new. I did not think the deck would come out looking like I just had it installed. I am very happy with the results. Rich gave me a fair price and got the job done in a timely fashion. Thanks Rich. I will surely call on you in the future."

"We had water damage in a room when we were out of town. I hired Joseph and Sons to do the repairs because the pricing was fair. He showed up on time, communicated well and was easy to work with. Angelo worked with me on getting information to my insurance company and found solutions to some ongoing issues we found as the demo started. He also did exterior waterproofing repairs to ensure future water issues would not happen. I had a few extra small requests and he did not nickel and dime us. His workers were very professional and cleaned up at the end of each day. We are very happy with the work and will use on future project."

"They scheduled a 30 minute window for coming to provide an estimate in the afternoon and showed up on time. Our roof repair needs were small, though on second story, steep roof next to the driveway-so something we could not do. First bid from another business had indicated it was a 2 man job and provided a bid. Top Quality HR provided a bid and since there were two of them here and we had some extra shingles, they offered to complete the work on the spot. They fixed the area where shingles were missing and found and tightened up another area that was obviously loosening. In addition, they cleaned the pine needles out of our gutter. We were happy with our experience."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Most building codes require that railing spindles (also known as balusters) on decks or stairs be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard is often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' which means a sphere with a 4-inch diameter should not be able to pass through the opening between balusters. This rule is in place to prevent small children and pets from slipping through the railing. For the same reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck or floor surface should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is essential to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

A deck doesn’t have to be perfectly level. Many pros even recommend a gentle slope to ensure proper drainage and increase longevity. The ideal gentle slope is about 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot away from the property, leading water away from the home to prevent pooling and reduce the risk of damage. It also minimizes rot, mold, and other moisture-related problems.

Routine cleaning, sealing/staining, and inspection prolong deck life and appearance.

Increases livable area and enhances aesthetic, often boosting property appeal.

Before installing a deck, you must build a base for the deck to rest upon, often made of compacted soil or gravel. While gravel is an optional material, it helps with drainage. Some contractors also recommend installing a weed control membrane, which helps provide a solid foundation for the frame. In the case of an elevated deck, a pro will often lay down a concrete slab as a foundation.
