"Outstanding. Prompt, courteous, knowledgeable, reliable, informative and neat. Concerned about functionality and aesthetics of all items installed. Aware of the newest products - in my instance a beautiful Decora type timer and unobtrusive vent cover for a bathroom exhaust. All at a price that is very reasonable."

Small jobs welcome

"Scott did a great job in upgrading my service panel (100 to 200 amps) in a day as promised. He does quality work at a reasonable price. Even the town inspector says he does good work which means he does it right the first time."

"I have used Pipe Works on numerous occasions as of this date and find them to provide excellent service at competitive prices. Their associates are great to work with and their prices are competitive. The work is always completed on time, as promised and the work area is left clean. I appreciate that they point out things that need repair in the not so distant future. It was great to wake up the other day with power coming from my new Kohler Generator"

"A+ for being prompt, accurate on time and on the scope of work. I did request to install needed equipment to run the generator and my house had some non-standard situations. I love that all challenges were solved in the right way, not the fast way. The electrician was very open-minded for debating on the possible approaches to an unexpected situations, etc. I love the work, very rational pricing and I would hire again."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

No, you should never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet in your house. This practice is extremely dangerous, often illegal, and can cause "back-feeding," where power from the generator flows back into utility lines, creating a life-threatening hazard for utility workers. It can also damage your home's electrical system, including appliances like pumps and HVAC fans. If the main power is restored while the generator is connected, it can destroy the generator and cause an electrical fire. To safely connect a generator, you must use a professionally installed transfer switch or an interlocking kit, which prevents back-feeding by disconnecting your home from the utility grid before the generator provides power.

In some situations, yes. Never try to put biofuel into any home generator without checking the specifics first. If a generator has the ability to run on diesel, it can also run pure biofuel (the clear kind made from seed oils, for example). But if you are using biofuel made from animal fats or vegetable oils, the generator will need significant modifications before it can handle a sludgier type of biofuel.

In most cases, there are no tax credits available for home generators. However, that’s a general statement that applies to federal tax credits, so you might have access to state or local tax incentives. You can check the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE) for more information about your area. If you hire a reliable home generator installer, they should also know if there are any state or local perks you can use to reduce your installation costs, including tax breaks and rebates.

Yes, installing a generator usually increases your property value because buyers are getting the added peace of mind knowing they’ll be able to maintain power through blackouts. In most cases, you should see close to a 100% return on investment (ROI). Keep in mind that home generators usually need a permanent foundation, and installing a concrete slab will likely raise your property taxes slightly.

Yes, in most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home models. Because these installations involve significant alterations to your home's electrical system and produce exhaust fumes, local governments often require a permit or inspection for safety purposes. A generator permit typically costs between $50 and $250, depending on your location. Your electrician or certified installer can usually handle the permitting process for you, but you will be responsible for the cost. It's a good practice to confirm with your installer that they will pull all necessary permits before work begins.
