"From start to finish, Steve was a dream to work with. First, he educated us on the different kinds of films to put on our new windows. He left us with three different patches of film on our window for a week so we can make a decision based on what kind of light and how it looks with different weather patterns. During the installation process Steve was a professional. Explained the entire process step by step. He was efficient, kind, and informative. His price was fair, his work and performance were off the charts, and above all, he was just a great guy. We are grateful we found him and our new home looks better than before!"

"Hitec windows was the best value compared to all the other companies we had come. We had 12 double hung windows, 2 storm doors, 1 exterior door and 1 slider. They did it all in 2 days with not one problem. They were very neat and organized. I would highly recommend this company for all your window and door needs. The windows and doors are beautiful and we are very glad we had HiTec Window do the installation."

Windows questions, answered by experts

Yes, egress windows are grandfathered. However, this comes with some specifications. If you are remodeling a basement or adding a sleeping area, you’ll need to update the egress windows to be up to proper code. But, if you’re leaving your home as is, you do not have to adhere to these requirements.

Wood windows are often worth the cost because they add more to curb appeal and your home value than more affordable options like vinyl and aluminum. Wood windows also offer better insulation than vinyl and aluminum windows, and they can last about twice as long. As such, they’re more expensive up front but offer greater value and a higher ROI.

The material around a window is simply called the window frame, but the individual pieces also have different names. The top portion of the frame is called the head, the side pieces are called jambs, and the bottom portion is called the sill. If you have multiple windows next to each other, you’ll also have a mullion, which is the frame piece that separates the individual windows. Windows stacked on top of each other are separated by a horizontal frame piece, which is called a transom.

You should avoid using abrasive materials and harsh chemicals when cleaning windows. Abrasive tools like scrubbing pads, rough cloths, or steel wool can permanently scratch and damage the glass. Harsh chemical cleaners containing alcohol or ammonia can damage window treatments, frame materials, and special features like tinting. It is also best to use distilled or filtered water instead of hard water, which can leave spots or streaks. For best results, use a clean microfiber cloth to wash the glass and old black and white newspapers to dry it without leaving streaks.

Well water can leave ugly marks on your window. A vinegar-water spray will remove most well water stains from your windows. However, you can also use a baking soda paste if the stain is too stubborn. Consider applying waterproofing protection to the glass surface after cleaning for long-term protection. A protective film or spray layer also makes it easier to remove the water stains next time.
