You can put wallpaper in a bathroom, whether over paneled walls or drywall, but it's important to choose the right type of wallpaper. Bathrooms tend to be humid environments, so you want to pick paper that's water-resistant, such as a vinyl wallpaper. Proper wall prep is also critical, so that the paper clings to the walls, even after several steamy showers.

When comparing peel-and-stick versus traditional wallpaper, peel-and-stick is more affordable and easier to DIY install. However, it doesn’t last as long as traditional wallpaper. Traditional wallpaper also holds up better in areas with moisture, such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Most experts would not recommend hanging wallpaper over existing wallpaper more than twice. Even if the walls are in good condition and primed well, that third layer of wallpaper could cause problems with adhesion. Unless you like bubbling paint and peeling wallpaper as an interior design choice, it’s better to remove at least one existing layer before adding any more to a wall.

While textured walls can elevate a space in many ways, there are a couple of downsides to consider. Namely, they’re hard to clean, and some textures fall out of fashion quickly. Make sure to consider all your options to find one you truly love before diving in. 

Painting over wallpaper is an efficient way to cover it if it’s in decent shape. Before painting over wallpaper, make sure the surface is clean and smooth. You may have to remove minor problem areas, such as lifted seams or small peels, with a sheetrock knife or putty knife. Add a latex- or oil-based primer to keep moisture at bay before painting. You’ll likely need two coats of paint to cover the area.
