A central vacuum is a permanent vacuum system that's installed throughout a building. It uses a central motor to suck dust, dirt and allergens through PVC pipes into a collection unit. A central vacuum's motor unit is usually located in a basement, garage, or utility room. A network of PVC pipes runs through the walls of the building and inlet valves are installed in walls throughout. To clean, plug a lightweight hose with cleaning attachment into an inlet valve. We have been in business for over 30 years. We solve problems and tackle projects that others have tried and failed. We are professionals who do one thing and one thing right and we are the best at what we do.

"He did an excellent job."

Rather than hiring multiple service providers to handle each job, let My Handyman of Dover, Portsmouth and Rochester take care of them “On time. Done right.®” Founded in 1996 and served nearly one million customers throughout North America, we are known as a one-call solution for a variety of residential and commercial repair and maintenance needs.

"Company put in a kitchen tile backsplash. It was a lot of trouble and it came out poorly around the cooktop. They agreed to finish and fix it up but it was still not completely done after paying them good money for it. Also cracked a tile that's installed. I got fed up with them not getting back to me. They made promises they didn't keep and supposed to guarantee their work. I've posted a more detailed post on other platforms. They charge way too much and don't provide the quality for their prices. Except for small jobs I would look elsewhere. They disappointed me after much assurance. Be sure the technician they use knows what he's doing as they hired new people and took chances with customers who pay well for their services. Also promised to complete some crown molding but it was lip service. Kept saying they were waiting on some molding for us and it never happened."

Central Vacuum Cleaners questions, answered by experts

They’ll use more electricity than the average upright vacuum, but not remarkably more. Most power units plug into a standard 120-volt outlet and don’t have significant power demands. You shouldn’t notice an increase in electricity bills. If you have any specific questions about energy costs, ask your installer as you examine purchase decisions. Larger power units will need more electricity for their suction levels.

Maintaining your central vacuum cleaner is crucial to extending its lifespan. Ensuring the filter is cleaned or changed often is vital to ensuring clogs don’t impact your motor. In addition, inspecting motor brushes regularly and lubricating the engine when needed helps keep it in tip-top shape. Finally, cleaning the central vacuum hose of dirt and debris helps keep clogs at bay, especially if you’ve vacuumed something wet or sticky.

Before deciding whether or not to install a central vacuum system, consider the pros and cons to determine if it’s right for you.

Pros

  • Increased suction power

  • Improved air quality

  • Reduced noise pollution

  • Longer lifespan than traditional self-contained vacuum units

Cons

  • Higher upfront installation costs

  • Expensive repairs

  • Requires significant storage space

The disadvantages associated with central vacuums start with cost. They are expensive to install, especially in existing homes, as retrofitting requires opening walls. The system's bulky hoses can also be inconvenient to maneuver and store compared to portable vacuums. Additionally, repairs may need professional service, adding to maintenance costs. Lastly, while powerful, they may be overkill for smaller homes or apartments, making the investment less practical for some households.

Common repairs for central vacuum cleaners include motor repair, electrical repair, and blocked filters. Central vacuum motor issues typically come with a burning smell and loss of suction. With these issues, you might need simple lubrication to keep it running smoothly, or for more extreme problems, you could need a motor replacement.

Electrical problems or losing suction strength, might be reasons to swap out electrical components for new ones. However, a local central vacuum repair professional can tell you the best plan of action for your system.
