"We would like to recommend Jerry Hovels to you as our first choice to remodel our kitchen. He transformed our 50s kitchen into a beautiful well designed updated working space. Je is a very talented craftsman in custom building cabinets to fit into the space given. Each door has a beautiful wood stain and precisely fits together as a whole unit. He also designed therequired plumbing, dry wall, electrical, and installed a new floor to match our dining room floor. He referred us to a counter top business and went with us to pick it out and helped install it. Jerry communicated with us on preferences on even the small details, such as choice of door hardware. We are pleased with his schedule, professional work, creativity. Jerry's careful detailed preparation and custom built cabinets added practical space in our kitchen. Relocating the stove, microwave, China hutch added convenience and storage space. He accommodated our travel and personal schedule."

"Paul answered my request promptly - was well prepared for the interview ( pictures of walls and blocks available) he listened to what we wanted and was able to work with in our budget and the time frame that we needed. The workers that he sent out to replace the wall were very polite and were experienced in what they were doing. They did a great job and cleanup. I highly recommend Paul Greenway and will look forward to working with him on other projects."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

There are two ways you can cut trim for doorways: with a miter saw or a table saw. Mitered joints need a 45-degree angle. If you’re unfamiliar with a miter saw, you might want to consider buying extra trim pieces or choosing butted joints instead. One wrong cut, and you’ll need to power up the saw again with a new piece.

Butted joints—also called shaker style—don’t need a 45-degree angle. Instead, your side pieces attach perpendicularly to the header trim and only require a straight cut.

It is not recommended to cut or drill into LVL (laminated veneer lumber) beams. As major structural components of a home, their composite structure can be compromised by alterations, which can weaken them and lead to cracking over time. If you must make modifications to an LVL beam, it is crucial to consult a structural engineer or general contractor first. A professional can advise on whether it's safe and provide specifics on the appropriate bit size, depth, and directionality for any necessary drilling.

When building a house, it is customary to use 16d nails that measure 3 1/2 inches in length to construct the frame. These nails are crucial in providing the necessary support and stability for structural elements like joists and studs, which ensures a sturdy framework.

Most contractors do not charge for meetings, but it can depend on the project, mainly if it includes detailed consultations or project planning. For general estimates, homeowners shouldn't expect to be charged. Always ask up front about meeting fees to avoid surprises and ensure you know what’s included in the process.

It is common for a contractor to ask for a down payment before starting a project, especially for jobs that require purchasing materials and equipment or hiring a crew. The deposit amount can range from 10% to 50% of the total job cost. While a request for up to 50% is not unusual, a contractor should not ask for more than that, and you should never pay for a project in full before the work has begun. To protect yourself, always discuss payment terms before starting and have a written contract that outlines the project timeline and expectations. Additionally, be sure to hire reputable contractors and check their licensing and insurance before the project begins.
