First, the team showed up 2 weeks after the initial visit. Worse than the delay was the complete lack of communication throughout the process ? getting updates or even basic responses was frustratingly difficult. The biggest issue, however, was the quality of the work. Their installation was poorly executed, and we ended up having to hire another company to fix their mistake ? costing us even more money on top of what we already paid Groundworks. We trusted them with an important job in our home and feel completely let down. I would not recommend Groundworks to anyone looking for reliable, professional service."

You don't technically need rebar for a concrete patio, but it's a good idea to install it, especially if your patio will support any heavy items. All concrete is susceptible to cracking, and rebar keeps cracks in check while maintaining a smooth, level surface. Without rebar, cracks will likely widen and cause the concrete to become uneven, compromising its structural integrity.

If you're only working with a gravel pad, and there is no concrete foundation, you might be able to upgrade to a concrete slab, but you’d have to speak with a professional concrete expert to confirm and get pricing. If you have a concrete foundation or cement block walls around the area where you want to build flooring, you might be able to pour a new concrete floor over the existing one to forgo repairs. In general, you can expect concrete to last 30 to 50 years. However, the type of concrete, site prep, and climate all affect how long concrete lasts. The proper removal of rocks and tree roots before installation can prevent cracks later on. While concrete takes little maintenance, repairing small cracks as they appear can also extend the life of the concrete.

Lally columns do require some kind of footing to ensure they have a strong enough base to provide the support they need to deliver, and, at the very least, they need to attach to the floor below. Some contractors will just use the existing foundation as a footing for temporary Lally columns, while some circumstances demand that the expert install a new footing. You might need a local structural engineer to weigh in on which is best for your project.

Concrete should be at least 4 inches thick for steps. This thickness boosts stability and prevents cracking and deterioration. After you’ve built your forms out of wood, fill the void with a sand or gravel base for concrete. Use an all-purpose concrete mix to form your steps. After pouring your concrete steps, be sure to screed and float the concrete.
