You have several other options when choosing gutters beyond faux copper made from vinyl, aluminum, or galvanized steel. You can also install real copper gutters, zinc gutters, wooden gutters, or vinyl, aluminum, or steel gutters that don't mimic the appearance of faux copper. Some homeowners prefer to forgo gutters entirely and instead opt for gutter alternatives like rain chains, box gutters, rain dispersal systems, or French drains.

When connecting a gutter to a downspout, make sure that both have the same outlet capacity. Meaning starting from your gutter and moving downwards, the diameter should match so you have a secure seal. Make sure you’re working downwards when attaching the pipes (for example, the gutter fits inside the downspout) as doing the reverse will cause leaks.

While gutter guards come in various materials and grades, stainless steel mesh gutter guards are generally considered the best type of gutter guard due to their durability and effectiveness. The mesh prevents most debris from entering the gutter. It's also much longer lasting and easier to clean than gutter guards made with other materials.

While not technically required, it’s a good idea. Replacing gutters, especially if they’re getting on in years, can sometimes even cost less than reinstalling existing gutters. The cost to replace or install gutters comes down to the size of your roof, the material costs, and the cost of labor in your area.
