GrAMPS Electric is a small, locally owned & operated Electrical Contracting company in the state of N.D. We've been in business since 2012. We have a Master, two Journeyman, and three Apprentice electricians on staff. Our Master and Journeymen have a combined 60 yrs. of experience. They also have a background involving high-voltage, 3-phase power. We bid and sub-contract with other larger companies. Terms for bid contracts usually require a 30 - 50% down payment. Second payout is due upon completion of "rough-in," and final payout due upon completion. Any extras not included within the scope of original bid are billed as Time & Material (T & M). Other requested general repairs & service calls are billed as T & M. Upon approval, will do occasionally accept installment payments.

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

In most parts of the country, it’s required by law that a licensed electrician be the one to connect your ceiling fan if the ceiling hasn’t already been wired to support one. We strongly recommend going with a professional if you need to install wiring into your home to power a ceiling fan.

If your home already has wires for a ceiling fan (and optional light kit), then it’s quite safe to wire and install it yourself. Always be very careful to shut off the power before you begin, and confirm that the power is safely off with a non-contact voltage tester before touching anything. It’s also highly recommended to use eye protection, rubberized gloves, and tools with rubber handles to keep yourself safe from electric shock.

The square footage of your room will dictate the correct ceiling fan blade size. For example:

  • Rooms smaller than 75 square feet require a fan that is 29 to 36 inches.

  • Rooms up to 175 square feet require 42- to 48-inch fans.

  • Rooms up to 350 square feet require 52- to 56-inch fans.

  • Expansive spaces over 350 square feet need a fan larger than 60 inches.

If you’re replacing an old fixture with a ceiling fan, you usually won’t need a permit, but if your electrician runs new wiring for the fixture, you likely will need a permit. Building permits are necessary in most municipalities if you’re making changes to your electrical system, so even if you have partial wiring run to the area and need new wiring installed for added functionality, you’ll probably need a permit. Your electrician should be able to let you know if you need one, and they’ll typically file the paperwork for you.

In short, no. You can use the square footage range chart in this article to determine the right size ceiling fan for both indoor and outdoor spaces. However, weather elements can damage types of ceiling fans that aren't designed for outdoor use, so your ceiling fan should be weather-resistant if you plan to install it outside.
