Many homeowners can handle a minor clog themselves, but if you have a clog in your main line, you’re best off hiring a local plumber to get the drain back to its normal flow rate.

On average, it takes four to eight hours to install a pedestal sink. However, several factors will influence how much time it takes to install a pedestal sink, including:

  • A replacement will take longer to put in than a new install

  • The size and weight of the pedestal sink—a pro may need an apprentice for help

  • It will take longer to change the sink type vs. replacing the pedestal with a duplicate

Try to tighten the clevis crew and adjust the lift rod if your sink stopper won’t stay up. Sometimes your screws became too loose over time, and as a result, there wasn’t enough resistance to keep the sink stopper up. If a damaged lift rod is the cause of the problem, you will need to replace it with a new rod.

Older faucet fixtures may have some corrosion, leaving them stuck. Try a few techniques to loosen the fixtures.

  • Wrap the fixture with a towel and tap the base with a hammer.

  • Use a putty knife to gently remove any caulk that may be holding the handle or fixture in place.

  • Apply a few drops of penetrating oil around the base of the fixture or around the nuts.

  • Purchase a faucet pulling tool to pop the fixture loose.

Hiring an emergency plumber is expensive because of the urgency and inconvenience, but there are a few things you can do to help keep costs down:

  • Minimize water damage by shutting off your water main 

  • Clean up pooling water immediately to reduce damage and mold growth

  • Avoid using fixtures if you have a clog or septic system backup

  • Verify that your plumber is licensed before hiring

  • Call a few plumbers for estimates if you can afford a short delay in getting service
