Gutter guards work in heavy rain, but perhaps not as well. The main purpose of gutter guards is to protect your gutters from getting clogged with debris, which can be carried (or worsened) by heavy rain. Clogged gutters are one of the most common problems homeowners will face since excess debris from trees or other outside elements can prevent water from passing through properly. Other common problems include leaks and holes, which can usually be repaired with gutter sealant or caulk, as well as damaged gutters from strong storms or improperly pitched gutters.

Icicles can form if your gutters are clogged, but that’s not always the issue. You could also have an ice dam on your roof from poor insulation inside. In that case, the melting snow can refreeze in the gutter even if there isn’t a clog. If you’re unsure of the underlying problem, call in a roofing company to assess the issue and implement a permanent solution for you.

While you don't technically need different gutters for metal roofs than you do for other types of roofs, most metal roofs use a half-round or K-style gutter system. On top of that, your gutters will need more brackets than homes that have shingle roofs since the gutters won’t fit as flush against the fascia as they would against traditional roofing systems, where they’re installed to the roof deck.

Gutters overflow in heavy rain for several reasons. The main reasons why your gutters could be overflowing in heavy rain include:

  • Not enough downspouts to effectively remove water from your gutters

  • Too small of a gutter width—the average gutter size is four to six inches

  • Clogged gutters

  • Incorrect slope
