"Andrew promptly showed up when he said he would. He completed the work in exactly the amount of time he said he would. He prepped and organized his staging area exceptionally and maintained a super clean work area. When his work was completed, it was as if he was never here. Outstanding!"

"Sheldon and his team were everything you could want in a painter. Prompt communication, fair price, good advice and excellent work. They went above an beyond to fix the little things that they found. No extra cost. They even moved the wood pile away from the deck and restacked it. High marks across the board."

"I thought it went exceptionally well. Their chief carpenter Paul was very particular about getting things exactly right. And so was Mike, the owner. The deck itself was a challenge because it was high off the ground (nearly 11 feet). And the weather was also a challenge (sub-zero mornings and snow). The horizontal surfaces of the deck are all Trex and I must say, the deck was built like the proverbial "brick outhouse." I have never seen step stringers made from "glue-lams" (essentially laminated beams). When you climb up the steps, it feels like you are climbing concrete steps, because they are so solid. The rebuild of the deck (including the tearing down of the existing one) was not cheap (Trex is way more expensive than wood), and it took a bit longer than promised, but it was worth it. The new deck looks super, and I feel like it could hold 50 people."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Hiring a contractor or professional deck refinisher is the best way to ensure your deck is properly stained. They have the expertise, tools, and supplies to do the job quickly and efficiently. However, staining a deck is a manageable task for most homeowners, and doing the job yourself can save money. Just keep in mind that DIY staining is a long process requiring physical strain, so it may not be the best option for everyone.

Yes, it is generally a very good idea to seal your deck after pressure washing. Power washing removes not only dirt and debris but also a thin layer of wood, leaving the surface exposed and more susceptible to weathering. Sealing is almost always needed after this process. After a general cleaning, sealing isn't automatically necessary if the existing sealant is still intact. You can test the surface by placing a few drops of water on it. If the water beads up, the sealant is working. If it soaks into the wood, it's time to apply a new sealant. If it has been a few years, it's wise to remove the old sealant, wash the deck, and reseal for maximum protection.

Provided conditions are ideal, staining an entire deck should take as little as a couple of hours and up to a couple of days to apply and cure. Additional procedures, like sealing a deck or using additional treatments, may extend the project by a few additional days.

Hot, intense sunshine can cause your stain to dry too quickly, which could lead it to look uneven or patchy. If you’re staining the deck during hotter months, it’s best to do it in the morning or evening once the wood has had time to cool down. If you’re staining in cooler weather with less sunshine, the time of day won’t make as much of a difference.

If you have wood decking, there are several common deck problems that you might encounter. For example, your natural wood boards may fade over time due to things like sunlight, weather, and debris. On top of that, some types of wood decking can rot, grow mold, and attract destructive pests—including termites, carpenter ants, and woodpeckers.
