"We had a sliding door installed to replace a cracked old metal one from the 50's. Tom is great to work with, showed us exactly how everything would be on the tablet. A few months later when our door came in, Andersen took out the old door, reinsulated the gap, and put in the new sliding door with trim. All told, everything turned out great. The price is well worth the investment in our home."

"I pay a monthly fee to CHW for insurance against equipment failure. Over a month ago CHW sent a repair technician to fix both of my garage doors, the technician made an adjustment on one door and chanced the opener on the other. A week or so ago the second door failed to open. Yes, my door opener is old, but the Warrantee says, if it can’t be fixed it will be replaced. CHW paid the tech $100 and said the rest $200 is on me. Please tell me why I should stay with CHW if I have to pay 2/3rds of the cost to replace the door opener? On a separate issue: Granted I accepted CHW’s offer of a Lowe’s card to replace my dishwasher, because I was unaware of how much dishwashers sell for, it cost me an additional 300. Again, please give me a reason for staying with CHW"

Door Repair questions, answered by experts

Yes, barn doors can be too heavy, although the limitation is usually imposed by the mounting hardware you buy and not your home’s framing, unless you’re building an unusually wide door. To keep the weight down, you can opt for 1-by material rather than 2-by material, and choose a softwood like pine rather than a hardwood like maple or oak. Check the weight limits on your mounting hardware, and always attach your door track to studs rather than to drywall anchors.

Longer screws can make a door more secure, but this isn’t a foolproof method for security. Replacing the short screws in your door’s strike plate with screws that are 3 inches long will make it much more difficult for an intruder to force entry by kicking down the door, but it won’t do anything to stop them from picking the lock.

You can open up more space between the door and the floor by sanding the bottom of the door, but it will take longer compared to using a hand planer. However, you could use a belt sander, which some believe is even better than a hand planer for planing a door. Also, it could leave a smoother finish on the bottom of the door.

The decision to repair or replace a door depends on several factors, including the extent of the damage, the cost of the repair, and whether it's an interior or exterior door. A repair is often the best route for minor issues, such as problems with hardware like locks or hinges. However, for more significant damage—like a large hole, damage near the hardware, or any issue that prevents the door from closing or locking properly—replacement is a better investment, as these problems can compromise your home's security. It's also useful to consider the door's location. Damage to interior doors typically doesn't threaten security, so a repair or partial replacement can be a good way to save money. For exterior doors, damage can be a security risk, making a full replacement the safer option, especially if the door frame is also damaged. To determine the best course of action for your specific situation and budget, it is recommended to consult a door repair specialist or installer.

Like many common door problems, warping can be caused by improper installation. When a door isn't installed correctly, there's a good chance that the poor seal is allowing moisture and drafts to seep through. When this happens, humidity will build up in the wood until it swells and warps.
