There are many benefits of granite countertops, but it’s not unusual for them to have seams—especially if you’re working with small slabs joined together. Seams are common on larger islands where the installer needs to use more than one granite slab to cover the surface. The question of which material is better comes down to personal preference. Formica is a popular brand of laminate countertops known for its durability and affordability. Due to its brand recognition, Formica is slightly more expensive than generic laminate countertops, but with that brand name comes a certain standard of quality.

You cannot permanently seal a butcher block countertop. No matter what material you use as a sealant, all finishes wear over time and eventually require refinishing. However, some materials are longer-lasting. For example, mineral oils only last about one month. Stains or sealants like polyurethane can last several years with proper care.

You should never use gritty or abrasive cleaners to clean your Formica countertops, and the same goes for scouring sponges, steel wool, or anything acid-based like vinegar. Formica can't handle high heat, so never place anything fresh from the oven or off the stovetop on a laminate surface because it will scorch.

The short answer is yes. A stone-safe, pH-neutral cleaner and a soft cloth are all you need to clean and maintain terrazzo. Harsh cleaners aren’t necessary. You can also apply stone polish every few months to refresh your terrazzo.  

It’s recommended that you clean your terrazzo countertops daily to remove dust before it begins to build up. Dust and other debris can cause small scratches over time. If you spill something, be sure to clean it up immediately before stains set in.
