"It's a pretty decent system, I think. They send you the pieces and you install them yourself, which is pretty easy. The only real problem I have is that one sensor is too far away from the panel...or there's some interference, and they haven't been able to fix that. It's an interior door, so it's not the end of the world, just a little annoying. Their customer service is pretty good though. Nice, smart customer service people on the other end, very polite and helpful."

Chimney Inspection questions, answered by experts

You can enjoy your TPO roof by making it into a rooftop deck. However, homeowners should use caution when hosting events on the roof. Specifically, no one should ever smoke a cigarette on a TPO roof, as they could burn holes in the roofing material and cause leaks. Also, it can be slippery. Homeowners can buy no-slip walk pads to keep people safe on the roof. You can also install a "floating deck" over the top of the TPO,  but your roofer has to be sure to never put any fasteners through the TPO.

It’s possible to walk on a clay tile roof, but you run the risk of breaking or cracking the tiles if you’re not careful, so it’s best not to walk on it if you can avoid it. If you or a contractor needs roof access, be sure to distribute your weight evenly and step on the portions of tile that are also supported underneath, which depends on your tile design. Walking on any roofing material is inherently dangerous, so wear rubber-soled shoes and use safety equipment if you need to access your roof.

Take a look at your roof shingles from the ground or from a ladder, and look for cracked or missing shingles, which are the most obvious signs of roof damage. You should also look for pockmarks from hail and blown debris, as well as blisters that could indicate a moisture issue or a problem with the installation. Inside your home, be on the lookout for water spots on the ceilings on your upper floor, as this is a clear sign of a roof leak.

The average cost for a residential roof inspection is typically between $150 and $500, with some homeowners paying as much as $1,000 or more. The national average is around $225. Key factors that influence the final price include the roof's size and complexity, its accessibility (a high pitch can increase cost due to risk), and the roofing material, as specialty types like slate may require a specialist. Other variables are your geographic location, the inspector's expertise, and the specific services included in the inspection. To get an accurate estimate, it is best to obtain quotes from several reputable roofing professionals in your area.

The principal, common, and auxiliary rafters are the most frequently used types of rafters. Principal rafters are large and typically appear toward the edges of the roof. Common rafters are smaller than principal rafters. Some people may use a mix of common and principal rafters. The auxiliary rafter is not common, but it provides extra reinforcement for a principal rafter on a large building.
