Instead, dig out clumps and their roots when you notice them early in the growing season. Herbicides can also treat grass clumps, but they can also affect other plants you might not want to kill, so use them sparingly and always follow manufacturer instructions.

Longer lengths are always better for striping, so mowing your grass to between 2½ to 4 inches tall. More length allows for optimal bendiness, plus it helps your lawn stay healthier, too. Remember, never mow more than ⅓ of the grass height at once to keep your lawn looking green and healthy.

You should wait about seven to 10 days after you top dress your lawn to mow. This will give the ground ample time to absorb the nutrients from the sand, topsoil, and compost, and help facilitate growth before you trim the existing grass. It’s also best to water the lawn frequently in the week or so after you top dress and before you mow.

Mowing is very good for your grass. It encourages the grass to grow back thicker and healthier. Keeping a lawn thick and healthy will also block out weeds that could stop grass from growing.
