"We met with several landscape company's and chose Nelson's for our residential backyard complete "re-do" on Rush Lake (Crosslake, MN). PART 1: Nelson's installed our entire yard sprinkler system. Rob proved that grass CAN grow in our area's sandy soil with consistent watering (since this is our weekend cabin, we could not have accomplished this without a well designed system). NOTE: I was pleasantly surprised how inexpensive this was. PART 2: Rob designed a landscape plan for our backyard, removed trees, improved the grade and made grass grow in a very shady area. Depending on the local climate and time of year, you only need to water your lawn by hand once or twice a week. It takes about 25 to 30 minutes with a hose and/or watering can. It doesn't require any electricity or complex irrigation systems and provides some exercise and time outdoors for free. You can also go for longer between waterings during rainy times.
Signs of an overwatered lawn can be visual, physical, or related to pests and weeds. Visually, the grass may appear yellow, wilted, patchy, or thin instead of green and lush. You might also notice the presence of mushrooms, other fungal growths, or an increase in weeds like crabgrass. Physically, the soil may be waterlogged, soggy, and perpetually damp. An overwatered lawn often feels mushy or makes a squishing sound underfoot, even several hours after watering. Additionally, you may see an increase in pests such as grubs. To prevent overwatering, ensure your lawn has proper drainage through periodic aeration and adjust your watering schedule to meet its actual needs.
To prepare your lawn for core aeration, water it the day before you aerate. (Alternatively, you can wait until it rains and aerate the following day.) Aerating after watering or a rainy day will make the process easier since you can penetrate moist soil better than dry soil. You should also flag your sprinklers so that you don’t accidentally hit them while aerating. If you have a lot of thatch buildup in your yard, you might need to dethatch your lawn before aerating as well.
Too much clover in your lawn can indicate several issues with your soil. Clover can thrive in soils with abnormally high pH, low-cut grass, and low nitrogen. Amending these issues can push clover out for good.
Hardy perennial clover loves the low nitrogen and compact conditions that often come with poor, infertile soils. But other factors also contribute to a clover explosion, including drought conditions, cool temperatures, under fertilization, and over-irrigation. You’ll need to evaluate all these elements when planning to kill off the clover.
Always do a poop sweep before mowing your lawn. Running your mower over dog waste can be messy, unsanitary, and smelly, and it can spread the poop to other parts of your lawn. Plus, you won’t be able to get it out of the grass (or the mower blades) easily.
