"We met with several landscape company's and chose Nelson's for our residential backyard complete "re-do" on Rush Lake (Crosslake, MN). PART 1: Nelson's installed our entire yard sprinkler system. Rob proved that grass CAN grow in our area's sandy soil with consistent watering (since this is our weekend cabin, we could not have accomplished this without a well designed system). NOTE: I was pleasantly surprised how inexpensive this was. PART 2: Rob designed a landscape plan for our backyard, removed trees, improved the grade and made grass grow in a very shady area. Bahia grass is not difficult to grow, but you might need patience for this slow-growing grass. Whereas some grass species, like Bermuda grass, can take 1 to 2 weeks to germinate, Bahia grass can take two or three times as long, making it seem like it won’t grow. But again, once your Bahia grass is established, it requires little maintenance. Its deep root system makes it a very durable grass that can bounce back after freezes and droughts.
Cut your lawn a bit shorter before the winter, typically between 2 and 2½ inches, depending on the variety of grass. On average, the best height to cut grass typically falls between 2 and 3 inches throughout the year. Aim for the shorter side of this range when you mow for the last time of the year to avoid common winter lawn diseases and moisture issues.
The best times to mow your lawn are mid-morning or early evening. Mowing in the mid-morning, around 10 a.m., allows any dew to evaporate so the grass is dry. Cutting dry grass is easier on both the lawn and the mower, and this timing gives the grass blades time to recover in the sunlight before the peak afternoon heat. Alternatively, you can mow in the late afternoon or early evening once the heat of the day has passed. Avoid mowing too early in the morning when the grass is still wet with dew, and try not to mow during the hottest part of the day, as high temperatures and harsh sunlight can put extra stress on the grass.
Your grass-growing schedule depends on where you live and the variety of grass in your lawn. Cool-season grasses typically stop between November and April with a slowdown at the peak of summer.
