"For a long time, I have been thinking about converting the bath and shower in my upstairs bathroom to a walk-in shower. After meeting with Sales Rep Ryan Latko and finding out that Mad City Home Improvement had a lifetime, transferable non-prorated all-inclusive warranty, I gladly picked out all the items I would need for my shower and said to get me on the schedule for my install. And then on Tuesday, November 25, Walter showed up to do my demolition and new install. Walter worked all day Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday (Thursday was Thanksgiving) and I could not be more pleased with the final product – my new and exciting walk-in shower. I spent time each day watching Walter work, asking questions, and making a photo diary of the entire process. If I had to tell someone what I thought of Walter, I would say he was extremely personable, a definite perfectionist, and an absolute wonderful individual as a person and as an employee of Mad City Home Improvement. I guess you can tell at this point that I am 100% satisfied with the entire process to get my new and beautiful walk-in shower and would highly recommend Mad City Home Improvement to anyone who is considering this kind of addition to their own home. You may be wondering what travertine is. Travertine is a natural stone found in mineral spring deposits and mined from a rock quarry. Manufacturers cut the stone into slabs and then into tiles or pavers.

The stone is tumbled in rubber or plastic-coated barrels to give it a rustic look or brushed with a wire wheel to give it texture. Additionally, polished travertine is finished with glossy sealants. In most cases, holes or pits are filled with color-matched resin, epoxy fillers, cement, or sanded grout.

You can lay tile directly on a plywood countertop, but if it’s a high-traffic surface in a kitchen, it’s better to add a moisture-resistant base. Plywood is susceptible to moisture, so if dampness seeps through from the surface around the sink or where you prep food, it can cause the plywood to warp, leading to grout damage, cracked tiles, or mold growth under the surface. 

Tile shouldn’t be set tight against the tub. Bathtubs can expand when filled, and they can shift slightly with the weight of occupants. For this reason, it’s important to leave a slight gap between the bathtub and the first row of tile. Aim for a narrow gap of approximately 1/16 of an inch, filled with caulk, to allow for this expansion and movement while still allowing for tile shower waterproofing.

Tile floor installation usually takes about 16 hours of active work along with a couple of days of drying time between tile and grout applications.

The amount of time it takes your installer will depend on many factors, including the square footage of the space, the tile material type, and if they need to make intricate tile cuts.

You can technically install tile over tile, but we don’t suggest it. Installing tile over any surface that isn’t a completely flat and prepared subfloor will result in a shoddy overall job, uneven flooring, tiles that don’t adhere, extra weight, gaps, cracks, and room for moisture and dirt to enter. For the best results, only install new tile on a flat, sanded surface like subflooring or concrete that is prepared for tile.

If you have asbestos tile and would rather tile over it than remove it, or if your existing tile is completely flat and bonded tightly to the floor, you may be able to tile over existing tile. But experts recommend thinking twice before you do.
