"We had Garden Structures & More add onto the beautiful privacy fence they had previously built for us, and we couldn't be happier with the final result. Our new and improved fence is even better than we had envisioned due to owner/designer/craftsman Hal's excellent ideas. All work was completed in a timely and professional manner. We truly enjoyed working with Hal and wouldn't hesitate to have him do our next home project. "

"Well, the first time the replacement was ordered it was the wrong one, which of course, delayed the installation a week. When it was finally installed I had to pay an additional $850 for code upgrades. This I was not informed of by Home Shield. Then we noticed that there was water on the garage floor and found that the pipe coming in from the wall was leaking at the wall so had to call the plumbing company back out to fix it. They first tried to say it was not their fault but since there wasn't a leak before they installed they did fix it. I have used Home Shield a few times before and never had a problem. Some of the companies they use are not the best so you have to research them before you commit. I have found HS service to be good if you do your homework. At the end of the day I was without hot water for almost 3 weeks but it was do to the plumbing company they sent out."

Pole Barn Builders questions, answered by experts

Proper post embedment is a critical structural factor for pole barn building. In Bemidji, the frost line reaches 60 inches deep. Set posts below this depth to prevent heaving. Additionally, Minnesota requires engineering structures for heavy ground snow loads of 50 to 55 pounds per square foot. Proper site grading, drainage, and material selection will protect your structure against extreme temperature swings and wet spring conditions for years to come.

Helpful?

Completing small pole barn building projects takes six to 12 weeks during the peak season. Larger agricultural or shop buildings require three to six months. The practical building season in Bemidji runs from late April through October. Avoid setting posts during the winter months due to frozen ground. Account for two to four weeks for permit processing, plus an additional four to eight weeks for scheduling a local professional.

Helpful?

Functional requirements dominate pole barn building in northern MN. Strict snow load engineering and frost-depth post setting dictate the baseline design. To balance aesthetics, choose earth-toned metal cladding to complement the natural landscape. Increase the roof pitch beyond the minimum requirement to shed snow effectively while achieving a traditional barn appearance. Position large overhead doors on the south or east side to block wind-driven snow and improve winter access.

Helpful?

Pole barn building offers immediate protection for vehicles and farm equipment against harsh winter weather. An insulated structure provides a warm, enclosed workshop space during freezing months. Over the long term, a properly constructed building adds significant property value to rural real estate in MN. With correctly set posts and engineered roof trusses, your structure will last 40 to 60 years while resisting damage from frost heave and heavy snow.

Helpful?

During pole barn building, you must choose a site that complies with local zoning setbacks and shoreland rules. You dictate the building orientation to manage prevailing northwest winds and snow drift patterns. You also decide between pouring a concrete floor or using compacted gravel. Finally, select your insulation, heating, and door placement to ensure the structure meets your daily needs while withstanding the harsh Bemidji climate.
