Paint Bros responded quickly to our questions, discussed options thoroughly with us, was open to our ideas and yet contributed his own helpful suggestions and expertise to the project. He provided a fair bid -- similar to other bids. The The hard-working owner checked in with us everyday, and he did the work himself with a helper. He showed up when promised and was always positive and cheerful and really nice to have around. He worked in terrible weather (when others might have found an excuse not to show up) and did REALLY nice work. Our deck never looked so good! Paint Bros did our project the right way, not the easy way. We also added to the project and had them do our dock while they were here and they were willing to take that on too. If you skip using a primer before painting brick, you risk ending up with a blotchy paint job that won’t last as long. Because of the natural variations in brick, paint can adhere and dry unevenly to different spots. When you use a primer, you put a neutralizing layer between the brick and the paint, evening the texture and color. Without a good primer, paint can also flake off in spots, come out blotchy, and wear away more easily.

Painting over wallpaper is an efficient way to cover it if it’s in decent shape. Before painting over wallpaper, make sure the surface is clean and smooth. You may have to remove minor problem areas, such as lifted seams or small peels, with a sheetrock knife or putty knife. Add a latex- or oil-based primer to keep moisture at bay before painting. You’ll likely need two coats of paint to cover the area.

You can test to see if your mist coat has worked by using masking tape after the drying period. Apply masking tape to an inconspicuous area of the wall after the mist coat has had at least 24 hours to dry. Then, peel off the tape. It should come up clear, with no paint residue. If it does have paint residue, you may need to remove the mist coat and try coating the plaster again with a different ratio of paint and water.

Whether or not you should paint your interior doors is really up to you. If you want a more natural, rustic appearance, consider staining your doors instead of painting. Note that this is often only possible for solid-core doors. If you’re finishing a hollow-core door, these often come pre-primed and are meant to receive a coat of paint before going up in your home.

You can sometimes add water to your spray gun, depending on the design of your sprayer and the type of paint, paint finish, or sealant. In many cases, mixing in around 10% percent of water to the paint makes for an easier application process and further evens out the mist. Read the instructions to make sure this is an appropriate step.
