Tiling over your existing backsplash is possible with the right materials and preparation. To do this, the existing backsplash must be clean and free of damage. If you’re installing the new tiles with thinset mortar, the thinset will fill in the existing grout lines as you go, so there won’t be any low spots. If you’re installing a peel and stick tile backsplash, you’ll need to add grout to the existing grout lines first to create a level surface.

Keep in mind that for some types of flooring, like hardwood or laminate, you’ll need to let the floor panels sit out of the packaging to acclimate them to their future home. This step will add at least a day to the project time, but it will help minimize the risk of warping due to changes in temperature and humidity.
