Replacing cast iron pipes when they’ve reached the end of their life span is key to preventing leaks and clogs. Over time, cast iron pipes corrode and experience pipe scale, which thickens the inside of the walls and increases the chance of clogs while also decreasing water flow. As the material deteriorates, you could experience costly leaks that increase reparation expenses. 

Cast iron can last between 50 and 75 years, but it’s still a good idea to check for leaks as your pipes approach the 25-year mark, as pipes can already show signs of deterioration within the first three decades.

Once the outside weather drops below 32 degrees, your pipes are at risk of freezing. Adjusting—or lowering—the thermostat is a common practice before going to bed or when leaving the house. If you want to keep your pipes from freezing, keep the thermostat set at no less than 55 degrees (so long as temperatures are below freezing). 

The water supply lines run underneath the bathtub. These two pipes deliver cold and hot water to the bathtub—the cold water comes from the main water supply, and the hot water comes from the water heater. The pipes are made from copper, cream-colored plastic CPVC, or red and blue PEX tubing.

If used correctly and sparingly, root killer shouldn’t damage your pipes. Make sure to follow the instructions on the back of the bottle or the company’s website to avoid any unintended damages. However, when it comes to copper sulfate, it’s better to avoid it. This type of root killer can damage your plumbing and the surrounding environment.

To bleed air from the pipes, start by turning off the main water supply. Then, starting with the faucet that’s closest to the water valve, open each of your faucets halfway, making sure to open both hot and cold options if they’re separate. This allows the air to escape the pipes. Once all faucets are open, turn your water supply back on and let the water run for 10 to 15 minutes until the faucets stop sputtering.
