"I initially met and worked with Scott on our extensive home renovation. He was our project coordinator as well as a creative and talented carpenter and all around skilled handyman. There really wasn’t anything he couldn’t do. Scott was great at repurposing our materials and coming up with thoughtful solutions. From new walls, ceilings, hardwood floors, bathrooms, new exterior deck, and custom bunks…Scott did it all. As an interior decorator, and knowing Scott’s talents, I pulled him in to work on a large client job. Again, his project management skills along with carpentry talents, really brought the project to life. Custom lighted wood walls, adult bunk room and amazing golf/pub room were just the highlights. Scott always left the job site clean and organized and his client communication is unsurpassed. He was always positive and proactive. There is no one I would rather work with. "It went great! We converted a living space to a formal dining area. Natalie helped us with layout, lighting, and window fixtures to help complement our dining table. She had great suggestions for accessories and furniture to make our room more elegant and to our taste. Highly recommend Natalie and Patricia Interiors."

Lighting questions, answered by experts

Flickering lights, intermittent outages, or physical damage to fixtures signal immediate repair to avoid electrical hazards.

The easiest and best way to power your outdoor lights is with the use of outdoor outlets. Most building codes now require exterior outlets in homes, so you likely already have outdoor outlets available to plug into. However, you can have these outlets installed if your space doesn’t currently include them.

No, you should not leave LED Christmas lights up all year. While the LED lights themselves are very durable, their wiring and casings can be as vulnerable as any Christmas lights. They’re subject to drying out, experiencing cold or sun damage that causes them to crack, and even damage caused by gnawing pests. (The same is true of incandescents.) If you want your lights to last the years that they’re rated for, bring them inside after Christmas is over.

If your lights are shorting out during rain storms or other winter events, you should probably replace them. These shorts indicate electrical issues that could cause serious hazards. Look for outdoor-rated lights with connectors made for rainy conditions to replace them. But if your Christmas lights are new and you want further protection, you can find weatherproof covers to add to the male-end connectors of your Christmas light strings. These can minimize the risk of shorts.

Local building codes typically require conduit around exterior wiring. Conduit protects the wire from moisture, extreme temperatures, sun exposure, and harsh weather conditions to prolong its lifespan. When a wire is worn out, it can be dangerous as the risk of electric shock or fire increases.
