"The job was more complicated than we all thought. However, his crew handled it all. They were very nice gentlemen that were doing the work. They cleaned up the yard as they were working. The finished fence looks great."

"James was EXCELLENT!! Very professional. In addition to the gutters which he also cleaned he hung all my Christmas lights around the house (my husband has bad knees). I could tell James takes a lot of pride in his work. His prices were very reasonable. I have already penciled him in for two more jobs we need done in the spring. I can say without a doubt we will be hiring James for a long time to come."

"The 3 story condo project that Preferred completed was done efficiently and professionally. I had the pleasure of meeting each associate during the project and all were courteous and professional. The quality of work was outstanding. Added value to the project for us included some deck cleaning and power washing of exterior spiral staircases. Kudos Todd to you and your staff."

"Excellent service! We will definitely use this provider again. What really impressed me the most about this provider was how clean he was and how he respected our property and belongings. He also used drop clothes and cleaned up after himself."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Materials for a second-story deck must be weather- and rot-resistant, though the specific choices will largely be determined by your budget and style preference. Pressure-treated wood is on the lower end of the price scale, but it can be customized and stained the way you like it. Composite, on the other hand, is pricier for installation and has fewer options for customization, but you’ll save money and time in the long run because it requires little maintenance.

When staining a deck, don’t skip surface prep, avoid staining damp or dirty boards, and don’t apply stain in extreme heat, cold, or wet conditions. Never overload the wood with a stain, as too much can cause tackiness or peeling. Also, don’t forget to test a small area first to ensure the color and finish look right.

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

Most building codes require that spindles or balusters on deck and stair railings be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard, often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' is designed to prevent small children or pets from slipping through the railing. A good way to visualize this is that a 4-inch sphere should not be able to pass between two spindles. For the same safety reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck floor should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is crucial to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

Cold temperatures can make your deck boards contract. If they don’t contract evenly, they can put pressure on the deck screws and cause them to pop out, making a noticeable sound. Winterizing your deck can help prevent this from happening.
