"The gentleman named Josh showed up this morning to perform the work for us after we received three different quotes for this project. All three were fast to respond and very professional. However, we hired Josh from Green Tree Services because of price. I will absolutely, without hesitation, hire him again for other jobs around the yard we would like done. We talked last night and he scheduled the appointment to do the work the next morning. Can't complain about the turn of time! I will be recommending this company to all I know!"

I received clear written information, calls to schedule a visit and quotes, and arrangements for the job. Tree removal and trimming were completed quickly and within a couple weeks. "Oh my goodness! The whole process could not have gone smoother. I was a little nervous about hiring someone but when Henry (I think that was his name) showed up he gave me an estimate to remove the tree and to grind the stump and since it seemed like a fair price so I decided then and there to have A 1 do the work. I did as much research as I could before calling around and one of the things that leaned me to go towards A 1 is because they are donors for The Special Olympics. This is a population of people that I work with and I like being able to support someone who supports these wonderful people. When Henry left, after giving me the quote I realized that I did not get a written quote but I decided to let it go and trust that he was a man of his word and I was not disappointed. It is refreshing to find people who actually say what the mean and mean what the say without having to have things in writing. Henry called me the day before letting me know when the crew would be there to take down the tree. The day of I received a call from Dave, I think it was, letting me know they were there to take remove the tree. When I got home I saw where the tree used to be. They cleaned the area very nicely. I am so pleased with the work they did and I will not hesitate to call them again."

"Sometimes you get what you pay for, and sometimes you do not. The work Dean Parks Tree Service performed for us was well worth the value. Quality work, professional same day service, and a friendly attitude is what you get.... (as well as the peace of mind that the tree is not going to fall on the neighbors house.) Thanks much, Dean Parks Tree Service. You are in our Rolodex!"

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

If tree branches cross well into your property line, in many cases, these branches become part of your property, and you can trim them up until your neighbor’s property line. However, this issue will vary based on local ordinances, so you should do your research before making any decisions. Better yet, speak with your neighbor about how to handle any tree issues.

If you don’t mind the branches, you can leave them be, but if they’re becoming a hazard, it’s definitely worth having a conversation.

Permits are often required for large tree removals, especially in urban areas or for protected species, ensuring regulation compliance and neighbor safety.

Pruning can impact cold hardiness—but it’s less about the exact temperature and more about temperature variation. Generally, you don’t want to prune trees when there’s a risk of temperatures suddenly dropping from 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit to 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below. A tree is most sensitive until 48 hours after it’s pruned.

No. Topping a tree refers to severely cutting down all its major branches and tree in a straight line. It was once recommended for streetside deciduous trees but has fallen out of practice. Topping leads to many problems, removing so much of the tree that many trees struggle to survive and become much more vulnerable to insects and diseases. Also, it doesn’t really help tree growth as once assumed and often leads to an ugly appearance of many sprouting stems in competition to become new main branches.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.
