"TLDR: Since having our driveway done, we have had American Paving do both my sister's and parent's drives. That should tell you a lot about the work they do. Details: We were tired of looking at the cracks and holes in our old driveway. Frankly, it made the outside of the house feel kinda dumpy. After reading the reviews, and seeing how frequently people praise them by name, I called for a quote. Matthew came out that day, measured everything, explained his plan, and quoted a fair price. Our driveway is long, so it was never going to be "cheap", but my wife said it best, “I don’t feel bad about what we spent.” On install day, Matt and James were on site making sure everything was done correctly. The crew worked quickly, but it never felt rushed. Worth noting... I asked them to be careful near a deck I installed myself, and they immediately had someone ready with a broom to keep it clean. Now we have a clean, even, well-edged driveway we actually enjoy looking at. Cheers"

"Stars and Stripes gives an estimate prior to service and schedules in a very timely manner. They work with your business schedule to make it convenient for customers so we donâ t have to close. The lot looks great the striping is very clean and nice looking. They are top notch and very professional and friendly to work with!!! We have hired them 3 times now and have never been disappointed with the quality of service and work. They even came out to touch up a corner that accidentally had a boat left in the lot after the boat was moved! Not all companies would do that!!! Thank you for your quality service!! "Salvador Bernal and his crew completed our retaining wall project in one day, with minimal disruption to our day (except for the sound of their hard, hot work, we might have been unaware of their presence). The wall was professionally designed, engineered and constructed with a proper drain installed behind the wall. This feature required much more excavation and gravel than for a wall without, but it’s necessary for the project to hold up against the push of earth after rain and ice. Cleanup was perfect. Cost of the project was below my expectations. Highly recommended."

"I recently had a egress window installed. The ground surrounding the area was full of sand, and I didn't have anywhere to dump it. For a nominal fee they removed the sand and applied top soil. Now I can grow grass in that area. I'm really pleased."

Paving Services questions, answered by experts

Yes, you should lightly wet the sand with a hose before laying the pavers on top. This activates the bonding agents in the sand, ensuring that your pavers don’t shift around during the installation process. However, you should make sure that the sand is not soaked; overwatering can cause the sand and pavers to not set properly.

You can expect your asphalt pavement to last anywhere from 20 to 30 years, or 25 years on average. The life expectancy of your asphalt driveway depends on the climate, the amount of traffic, and how well you maintain it. While you can’t necessarily control some of these factors, you can control the amount of maintenance effort you put into your driveway.

To prevent your asphalt from deteriorating prematurely, you should follow a good maintenance routine involving regular cleaning, reparation work, and resealing.

While blacktop is a type of asphalt, the terms should not be used interchangeably, as not all asphalt qualifies as blacktop. The primary differences are in their composition, production process, and ideal applications. Blacktop contains more stone than other types of asphalt and is heated to a higher temperature during production—300°F or more—while hot-mix asphalt is heated to between 275°F and 300°F. The ratio of bitumen (a tar-like crude oil) is a key differentiator, though sources vary: some state blacktop has less bitumen, making it less durable, while others claim it has a higher ratio. Due to these differences, asphalt is generally more durable and better for high-traffic areas like highways and streets, while blacktop is more suitable for playgrounds and residential driveways. For a driveway project, it is best to consult a professional to determine the most appropriate material.

If you're designing a new patio in an area with poor drainage, permeable pavers made from porous materials may help prevent water issues. Most permeable pavers feature a gravel-only aggregate base instead of a concrete base to allow water to flow through instead of getting trapped. While beneficial in some cases, permeable pavers come with higher initial costs and greater load-bearing limitations compared to traditional pavers.

The answer to whether or not you need to get a permit before you start your driveway can vary widely based on local ordinances and the scope of your driveway ideas. In most urban and suburban areas, a permit is needed before building a new driveway to ensure that a homeowner is using safe materials and proper drainage practices while designing and constructing a new driveway. In some rural areas, a homeowner may not be required to apply for a permit. When building a new driveway on your own, always check with your local building department to see if you need to request a permit. When hiring a driveway contractor, verify that the right permits are being used before driveway construction begins.
