"The boiler at the Lansing Woman's Club died on December 7, 2021. Mike from Miles Plumbing and Heating was the only one of 4 contractors to actually take pictures of our old boiler and send them to his supply person on-the-spot. Within 24 hours he had a new unit located. The price was competitive. Within 10 days the new unit had arrived from New York and Mike and his team set about removing the old boiler, taking care to protect all the flooring material at the clubhouse. The entire crew was punctual, professional, and extremely courteous in answering questions about boilers in general and this installation specifically. Despite all of this happening over the Christmas and New Year's holidays, Miles had the new system up and running on January 5, 2022. For a fully-foamed hot tub, freezing typically occurs when the temperature drops below 28 degrees Fahrenheit and remains at or below this level continuously for a minimum of 36 hours. If your hot tub and pumps are still operational, however, the water circulates, and this continuous movement helps prevent freezing, even in very cold conditions. This circulation, along with the insulation provided by the foam, helps maintain the water temperature and prevent it from freezing during extended cold periods. Still, if you’re not planning to run it regularly, be sure to winterize the hot tub properly to prevent damage from freezing.

Most hot tubs will experience leaks due to wear and tear in the plumbing or the shell itself. The second most common issue is a heater malfunction due to the ongoing heat stress on moving parts. Finally, clogs happen in hot tub jets, especially when it’s time to change the filter.

Using bubble bath, bath oils, bath salts, or moisturizing products that contain butters or oils can damage your jetted tub. Because of the water pump and jet mechanism, you need to be more selective with products for a jetted tub than you would for a traditional bathtub in order to keep it functioning properly and avoid expensive repairs. These products also leave residue that can feed mildew and mold, so it’s best to avoid them.

Hot tub repairs cost between $200 and $500 on average. You can minimize those costs by maintaining your hot tub and keeping necessary supplies on hand. An elevated shelf in the garage is a great place to store your water care chemicals so that kids and pets will stay safe and you’ll always have them around. 

Your hot tub should be drained of existing water, cleaned, and refilled every three to four months at a minimum. Follow your tub manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaning, and rinse thoroughly when finished to eliminate any residue from the cleaning products. This is also a good time to inspect your tub’s cover in good lighting for any leaks, tears, or other damage that might cause problems. 

Using your hot tub manufacturer’s suggested cleaners and methods, keep your hot tub filters clean to avoid a loss of water heat. This will help extend the filter’s useful life and efficiency. If the filter is more than two to three years old, replace it with a new one and buy a second filter to keep around as a spare.

The general rule of thumb is to lower it by about five degrees when you know you’re not using your hot tub for an extended period of time. With only a slight decrease in temperature, it will be easier to increase it to a desirable level when you’re ready to get back in the water instead of starting from scratch.
