"I can’t say enough good things about Olson Electric and Ron Olson. On the Friday of a holiday weekend, with a houseful of company, we discovered that our dishwasher had completely lost power. Not exactly the kind of problem you want heading into a busy weekend. I called Ron, and he came right over. He took the time to troubleshoot the issue, quickly diagnosed a fried circuit board, and helped us figure out the best path forward. We ultimately decided to purchase a new dishwasher, and Ron came right back the very same day to install it. That kind of responsiveness and service is almost unheard of these days. Ron was professional, knowledgeable, kind, and incredibly helpful from start to finish. Best service ever, and a genuinely super nice guy. I highly recommend Olson Electric."

"The last was a rental company that we have and we used them for an air conditioning and heating system. It was Bototach Mechanical. It’s been a good program for us. They’re very responsive. I don’t know what the thought process was. My husband said, well let’s try these guys and so we did. We have an older home and it’s proved to be a very good deal. The quality has been pretty good, so I would give them an A for the quality. I will give you one helpful hint though. If the company decides they want to replace an appliance, you need to call them and negotiate with them because you can upgrade, but you need to talk to them in person not just do it over the internet."

Solar Panels questions, answered by experts

Although solar panels harness the sun's power, they come at an environmental cost. The manufacturing process requires large amounts of water and involves hazardous materials like cadmium, silicon, and gallium arsenide. These materials don’t pose safety hazards while the panels are in use but can pose a problem when left in landfills. Over time, hazardous materials can leach into the environment. This is why recycling solar panels whenever possible is better than taking them to landfills.

Installing solar panels is worth it if you’re frustrated with paying high utility bills, live in a sunny location, and qualify for tax credits and incentives. Most homeowners cut between $650 and $1,500 from their utility bills each year by installing solar panels. Over the course of your panel’s warranty, you could save anywhere from $16,300 to $37,500, though those in sunny areas with high energy costs could save more than $100,000.

In most cases, solar panels are covered by homeowners insurance because they are considered a permanently attached part of the home, and you may not need additional coverage. However, it is essential to read the fine print of your specific policy to understand the extent of the coverage, as some policies might only cover certain types of damage, such as hail. Always check with your insurance provider before installing solar panels to ensure your policy provides adequate coverage for your investment.

The best solar-panel mounting system will depend on your property layout, but you’ll typically want to try for south-facing panels to get the most sun. Roof mounting and wall mounting are both popular, but if your well setup is far away from buildings and other structures you can also set up a freestanding aluminum frame to mount your panels.

Solar shingles and solar panels are not the same. While solar shingles use the same technology as traditional solar panels, they integrate with your existing roof. That means they are used to build your roof instead of simply resting on top of it. When comparing solar shingles and solar panels, it's helpful to know that solar shingles are more aesthetically pleasing than solar roof panels. They also do better in harsh weather due to limited uplift from strong winds.
