While the experience of pouring is something I do lack, I have instead opted to go the academic route to learn these trades. While the time there I’ve gain a lot of respect for the labor intensive work that is put into concrete and pouring a slab that one can be proud of. It takes real skill to finish concrete to the desired outcome and that is not something I will pretend I have, but I do have the ability to set forms and lay down aggregate before hand to help the pouring crew get along quicker. In my book of tips I constantly hear, I wrote that time is money and the best way to make money is by taking time with your work and craftsmanship, the work will speak for itself. I’ve also hear that calm is smooth and smooth is fast so I try to take that into account along with the time rule.

Concrete Patio Companies questions, answered by experts

It depends on whether you’re looking at residential or commercial buildings. For residential buildings, the 2018 International Residential Code asks for a maximum riser (or rise) height of 7 3/4 inches and a minimum tread depth (or run) of 10 inches.

For fixed stairs in commercial buildings, OSHA requires a rise between 6 and 7.5 inches, with a run between 10 and 14 inches. The standards are different for spiral staircases.

Stepping stones should match an average human stride, so the general rule is to place them about 24 inches between stones. However, many designs put stones closer together. If you choose to plant in between them, leave at least 6 to 8 inches between stones to give plants room to grow.

The average patio takes anywhere from 30 to 50 hours to build, including leveling the ground and paving the patio. If you’re doing the work yourself, you might want to plan on spending significantly more time, especially if you don’t have all the equipment or experience. After completing your patio build, consider hiring a pro to prepare the patio for spring.

With proper maintenance, exterior concrete steps can last 25 to 50 years or more. In most cases, your steps will require some minor repairs over that time frame, including sealing surface cracks and resurfacing to keep them in good condition. Interior concrete steps should last even longer, normally between 50 and 75 years, as they don’t have to stand up to the elements.

Scorpions have difficulty climbing smooth, non-porous surfaces like clean glass or polished metal because their pincers and feet cannot grip the surface effectively. While they are excellent climbers on rough or textured materials such as wood, stucco, or brick, slick surfaces prevent them from gaining traction or anchoring themselves. If you're trying to scorpion-proof parts of your home, using smooth materials for barriers or containers can be an effective deterrent strategy.
