Siding and cladding are two popular exterior wall coverings that protect homes from the elements and provide insulation, but they differ in design and application. Siding is applied directly to a home’s exterior, providing some insulation and basic shielding from the elements. Siding underlayment varies based on the type of material, but most siding is installed on top of a vapor barrier, a moisture-resistant house wrap, sheathing made from plywood or oriented strand board (OSB), and a layer of insulation sheeting. Having the correct underlayment is a critical part of properly installing siding and will protect your home from water intrusion, structural damage, and energy loss.

While vinyl is the less expensive option, composite siding has been known to be more durable than vinyl. In addition, because it is made from recycled materials, it is a more ecologically-friendly choice. Composite siding is also more luxurious looking and comes in a much wider range of styles and colors.
