Homeowners insurance sometimes covers roof decking, but it depends on the cause of damage and whether the decking was properly installed. More and more insurance companies are writing torch down applications out of their liability insurance for contractors. If torch down is covered, they generally require a worker to stay on site for two hours after the last flame is extinguished.

For this reason, cold application modified bitumen—also known as “peel and stick”—is becoming more popular, and torch down is decreasing in popularity. Modified bitumen is taking its place, as it uses both hot and cold applications.

It’s possible to install solar panels on a tar and gravel roof, but it does increase the risk of roof leaks more than installing solar on a sloped roof would. Flat roofs pool water in heavy rain and hold onto snow longer than sloped roofs do, so all aspects of the roof will be exposed to moisture and water more readily. Adding roof penetrations to install the solar racking system will increase that risk further.

The most common slope, or roof pitch, for a shed is 4:12 or four inches of height for every horizontal foot. For areas that experience heavy snow loads, a steeper roof of 6:12 or 9:12 is best. 

There are several pros and cons of flat roofs. One disadvantage of flat roofs is that you lose potential attic space because it's flat. Flat roofs tend to pool water and because they lack an angle, any leak in the roof—usually due to a bad seal—has the potential to let in a lot of water. They don’t work well in climates with snow. Flat roofs are also structurally weaker than sloped roofs.
