"David figured out a challenging project on a cabinet so old that its hinges are no longer available. He was courteous, professional and punctual. I am grateful that his creative thinking and stick-to-itiveness resulted in a cabinet door that is working again! Thank you, David!!!"

"Tom does awesome work. He did a make over on my two kids bedrooms after they moved out. Repair walls, painted, install new vanity with sink in the bathroom, put a new floor in one of the bathrooms. He does high quality work at a great price and on budget."

"We were looking around to have our unfinishment basement finished into an in-law suite. we asked around for about a month. there were a few people that had mentioned K&C Home Improvement to us. so we gave them a call, we told them what we wanted, and all the obstacles that they would need to work around, like the columns a staircase and obviously sewer pipes. I honestly thought that they would say it couldn't be done or didn't want the job. but nope they said they could do it. I was thinking where there was so much to work around that it would be a weird setup but nope it came out beyond what we envisioned . It's absolutely beautiful !! we want to thank you, and beyond , for our new lovely place we couldn't be happier."

"Very nice team who worked very hard to transform my home with their beautiful painting. These guys worked so hard and so conscientiously to get everything right. They were a real pleasure to have around the house for the week it took them to paint my little bungalow in Blue Hill, Maine. I wish I had more rooms for them to paint, or another house, they are that good!"

Painting questions, answered by experts

A properly applied coat of stain will last between 3 and 8 years, depending on your climate. If you live in a place where your fence experiences a lot of moisture or high heat, your stain will last for a shorter period than in more temperate conditions. We recommend reapplying stain every 3 to 5 years to keep your wood in good condition.

Wood stain is not flammable after it dries. The solvent in wood stain is what causes the liquid form to be highly flammable, but the stain drying process involves the solvents dissolving, which leaves behind a non-flammable product on your wood project. Wood stain is, however, flammable before you apply it, so you should always store partially full cans and used wood stain rags away from sources of heat and open flames.

An exterior paint job typically lasts between 5 and 10 years, though this can range from 3 to 17 years depending on several factors. The longevity is influenced by the quality of the paint and primer, the quality of the application, the local climate, and the type of surface being painted. For example, paint on wood siding may need to be redone every 3 to 7 years, while painted brick can last up to 17 years. Aluminum siding often needs repainting every 5 years.

Wood stains last anywhere from two to five years, depending on exposure to the elements, your local climate, the type of stain, and the surface it’s on. For instance, vertical surfaces last longer than horizontal surfaces. Some types of woods, like dense hardwoods, will require a recoat yearly, as they are too dense for the stain to absorb. In any event, apply a recoat every 2 to 4 years. As for storage, a can of unopened stain can last up to 5 years, though results may vary.

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.
