"I hired this company to do electrical run from my house to my shed. I was so impressed with their work and then reasonable price for the work they did. I had another problem with electric in my kitchen. I called them to come and fix it which they did in a short amount of time for a reasonable price. I would call them anytime."

"Professional, responsive, and efficient. Sunup Solar designed and installed our off-grid system during late winter and fit into our time crunch to move into our new home. We are ecstatic to show photos and tell others how an off-grid lifestyle can be modern, and in our case, even within sight of on-grid neighbors. During the hottest days we run AC without worrying about a power bill, and when a summer storm hits our lights never go out. Our home has become an example for countless family and friends to consider building off-grid, and we continue to recommend Sunup Solar to folks across New England. Thank you Hunter and your team for powering our dream home."

Solar Panels questions, answered by experts

Yes, going solar really saves money. In fact, according to some calculations, the average homeowner who switches from electric to solar power will save almost $2,000 a year on energy costs. While buying solar panels and switching to solar can be costly up front, the savings add up over time. If you can sell back extra energy or take advantage of tax incentives, your savings can be even higher.

Insurance companies aren’t against solar panels, but they may have concerns about the risks and costs of insuring solar. The type of policy, where you live, and the insurance company itself matter. Extreme weather can damage solar panels, and faulty installation or electrical malfunctions pose a fire risk—this, in turn, can increase insurance company liability and payouts. However, you’re likely to keep coverage as long as you have a pro install the solar system, keep it maintained, can pass a solar panel inspection, and update your homeowners policy to include solar.

You can install solar panels on a flat or pitched roof, but keep in mind that they will need to rest at a 30- to 50-degree tilt for optimal sun absorption. It costs more to install solar panels on a flat roof because you will need to install a framing system and likely hire a structural engineer. If your roof has a pitch of more than 40 degrees, it may not be a good candidate for solar panels.

In almost every case, solar panels need to be removed to replace roof shingles. In some cases, such as solar installations where the panels are on raised platforms above the roof surface, installers may be able to install new shingles without removing the solar installation. However, to get a quality roofing installation, panels need to come off. Most roofing contractors won’t remove or reinstall solar panels as part of a roofing project, so you’ll need to contact your solar provider.

Yes, you can connect an inverter directly to your solar panels without solar battery storage if your home is connected to the power grid. However, most pros don’t recommend a direct connection because solar panels don’t put out steady voltage. It’s always best to install a charge controller between your solar panel and your inverter to regulate the flow of energy and ensure a stable power supply.
