Small jobs welcome

"The new deck is perfect. They showed up on time each day and worked the entire time they were here. They even noticed a few issues from the previous contractor and brought them to my attention. Clarke Builders pays close attention to what theyâ re doing. Great, quick work. I couldnâ t be happier. I would hire again, anytime."

"Jim was a very hard worker. Rain or shine he was there as advertised. Quality was great. His expertise at building decks was evident. As he was working, he noticed little items that had not been on the original bid and completed them without additional charge. We would hire him again without hesitation."

"Andy did an excellent job of cleaning 20 years of bottom paint off the bottom of my 21 foot fiberglass boat. Paint was removed to the boot stripe and there was no damage to the glass. The work was completed in my yard which was left clean with no residue. Great job"

"Davy actually did multiple projects for me. Installed 2 new toilets, I new bath sink, cleaned (shampooed and destained) carpeting in whole house, Sheetrock and taped areas treated for mold, fixed kitchen sink faucet. I have new projects coming in the spring for him: installing shelving in bathroom and kitchen cabinets and at this time painting my front deck/porch and all window shudders on the house—more as need arises. Davy is very professional, thorough, conscientious, trustworthy, price reasonable, and wonderful! This is a new house purchase for me and he has been my reliable handyman. He makes sure any construction mess is thoroughly put back right! I will be relying on Davy on any project I need in the future."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Spindles on a deck may also be called balusters or pickets. While not as important to the structural support of the deck as the rail posts, they play a critical role in ensuring the deck is safe to use by closing in large gaps in the railing. For this reason, balusters must be no more than 4 inches away from one another.

Footings for ground-level decks need to be at least 12 inches deep, and some areas require them to be even deeper. A standard range for deck footings is anywhere from 12 to 48 inches. The minimum footing depth is determined by an area’s frost line and soil conditions. If you’re unsure how deep to install deck footings, check local building codes to find the minimum footing depth in your area.

Choices include wood, composite, and hardwoods, each with unique benefits.

The cost to build a deck around a pool typically ranges from $3,000 to $12,000, depending on the size, material, and whether you tackle the build yourself. Most people pay an average of $5,000 for their pool deck project. Hiring a pro to build a pool will cost you more for labor, but it will be worth it to ensure a safe and secure installation.

For the best results, stay off of your deck for at least 48 hours after sealing it. Giving the sealant at least two full days to cure ensures it can fully penetrate the wood, giving you the most protection from sun and weather damage later on. Walking on the deck too soon can prevent it from properly curing and cause your deck to weather prematurely.
