Central Vacs Unlimited is a family-owned business which was started in 1974 and has been under the current ownership since 1997. We are one of the largest dealers of central vacuums and intercoms in the mid-Atlantic area. The showroom is stocked with many of our products enabling customers to "test drive" them before they are installed. We do not subcontract our work. Our own employees do the installations and make service calls. We are not aligned with a single manufacturer like many other companies. In fact, we offer more brands and product choices than virtually any other company. This enables us to provide products which meet the exact needs of our customers. Free estimates are provided on installation of new systems. We offer free technical support over the phone. Often, we help customers troubleshoot and repair systems on their own. Our courteous staff is available six days a week to greet our customers. We welcome an opportunity to work with you.

"Mike came to Annapolis yesterday to repair my central vac. Showed him the unit and then went inside for a short while and then asked him if he carried parts on what appeared to be a well-equipped truck. He said the motor wasn't on the truck; it was already installed. I was amazed. He was punctual, smart. fast and efficient and helped me use the warranty. Couldn't be happier with the service and expertise. Highly recommend."

Central Vacuum Cleaners questions, answered by experts

While caulking is handy for quite a bit of jobs, it’s still limited. Any crack or gap larger than 1/4 inch is best left for a more intensive repair job. When you hire house painters, they should run a thorough check to see what they need to repair before they start the job.

Large repairs that caulking typically won’t do well with include cracks or holes larger than a 1/4 inch, rotted wood, or metal surfaces, such as garage doors.

Before deciding whether or not to install a central vacuum system, consider the pros and cons to determine if it’s right for you.

Pros

  • Increased suction power

  • Improved air quality

  • Reduced noise pollution

  • Longer lifespan than traditional self-contained vacuum units

Cons

  • Higher upfront installation costs

  • Expensive repairs

  • Requires significant storage space

Regular cleaning, sealing, and inspections help identify problems early and maintain aesthetics.

It can be difficult to know right away if your central vacuum is clogged since it operates quietly compared to regular vacuums. However, there are a couple of signs you can look for. If you feel like it’s losing suction or isn’t cleaning effectively, then there’s likely a clog somewhere.

Make sure you turn the vacuum on and feel the end of the hose handle. If you don’t feel any suction, then you’re dealing with a clog in the hose. You can see if the clog is further down in the system by attaching the hose to each outlet until you find the one with the least amount of suction.

They’ll use more electricity than the average upright vacuum, but not remarkably more. Most power units plug into a standard 120-volt outlet and don’t have significant power demands. You shouldn’t notice an increase in electricity bills. If you have any specific questions about energy costs, ask your installer as you examine purchase decisions. Larger power units will need more electricity for their suction levels.
