"Worked with John at Five Star Deck Services on a recent project involving updating my already-in-place deck. From the start, John was thorough in assessing what needed to be done with the deck and was also transparent with pricing. Everybody working on the job was also knowledgeable, capable, timely, and personable. They are an excellent company to work with, and not to mention they do fantastic work. Highly recommend working with Five Star Deck Services if you need a deck or deck repairs."

"The crew that replaced the deck was prompt and did a high quality job. They evidently though did not speak fluent English. The project manager and office manager of Deck Soldier answered all of my questions, but could have done a better job communicating on their own initiative what the crew was planning to do the next day when they left for the day while the job was in progress. All in all, though, we're very pleased with the new deck and I would Deck Soldier an A grade for the job. It was expensive, but you get what you pay for and I would recommend them"

"WOW! Alex Williams and his crew have got to be the best people I've ever met for professionalism, a great price, efficiency and major attention to detail on fixing up the exterior of our house. We are VERY pleased! They removed the old roof and felt and replaced it with GAF Ultra HD shingles, an ice and water barrier layer along the edges and Deck Armor-a synthetic underlayment that is remarkable-on the rest of the roof. Heavy aluminum, six-inch seamless guttering and larger downspouts came next. Alex and his crew along with his son, Stan-of Stan's Home Improvements (see HomeAdvisor's review on Stan, also) took care of little details around the roof vents, the wood pellet stove chimney and the main oil burner chimney. They even do interior work, too. This team was so good, that we even had our siding painted-they did this meticulously, along with the chimney-and finally, Leaf Guard on the main roofs. AND, THEY LEFT THE AREA SPOTLESS! My husband and I do a lot of major projects around the house-we built it in 1971-and we know how to do lots of projects, but it was a pleasure to see Alex and Co. do the job so fast and so well. Alex and his crew were more than great-they were superb, AND they're coming around in the warmer early summer to do a flatter roof with MuleHide, to match the 50-year roof they just installed. Alex Williams and Stan and the crew did it all and at a fair price. You can't go wrong with them. (We’ve even been recommending them to our friends and acquaintences.) Jane and Frederick G. Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

If you want to make a deck cleaner from products already in your home, there are various options. The most common is to use a gentle blend of 1 gallon of warm water and 2 tablespoons of ammonia-free dish soap. You can also mix water with distilled vinegar. Sprinkling on some baking soda can help to remove mold and mildew. You can add oxygen bleach (but never damaging chlorine bleach) to the water and ammonia-free dish soap solution for something a bit stronger.

PVC decking tends to be cooler than composite because the material is less dense and absorbs less heat. However, it depends on the deck’s color. A dark-colored PVC deck may run hotter than a light-colored composite deck. If you’re concerned about your deck getting too hot, it’s best to stick to a light color such as beige or gray.

Decks are generally more expensive to build because they require elevating and railings. The difference between decks and patios is that decks are elevated, while patios are usually on the ground level. Plus, decks are usually made of wood and need more maintenance than most patios. However, decks and patios serve the same purpose, providing outdoor space for you to enjoy.

The least expensive way to build a pool deck is with concrete deck blocks, pressure-treated lumber, and the appropriate hardware for hanging joists and securing deck boards. With these basic yet durable deck materials, you'll have a pool deck that's built to last without the high price tag. You should also stain or seal the deck to protect it against the elements.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.
