"We are so impressed with MC Interiors. They have thousands of fabrics from which to choose. We chose one that was available in-house. We could not believe that the reupholstering took just one day."

"Worked well. I was glad to remember we had an upholstered footboard bench that had stains on it. They did a great job removing those stains as well."

Small jobs welcome

"I purchased an expensive outdoor furniture set a year and half ago which cost $3,500.00 from a well-known nursey in Davidsonville, MD. After a year I noticed the furniture was splintering and turning an ashen gray. I called the nursery several times about the condition and each time was told to contact the manufacturer (which was useless advice). Frustrated and getting ready to throw out the set, I searched the Internet for a restoration company and luckily, I found â The White Owl Studio, LLCâ . I sent Mr. Hunsicker pictures and he agreed to restore the set. When he delivered the set â it was AMAZING, the set was restored to an even better looking and much studier condition than when I purchased. He replaced all of hardware and even gave me a container of oil to apply in the Fall. I was so impressed with his work I started looking around the house for anything that needed restoring. THANK YOU, Mr. Hunsicker!"

Upholstering questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can reupholster antique furniture, and it’s a great way to extend the life of your pieces and keep them looking fresh and new for years to come. In fact, since reupholstering furniture is significantly more affordable than replacing it, reviving antique furniture can be a cost-effective way to keep that family heirloom usable for much longer. It’s usually a good idea to leave antique reupholstering to a professional, as they will have the tools and expertise to ensure the piece isn’t damaged and looks professionally finished.

Reupholstering is often worthwhile for high-quality, antique, or sentimental couches, especially if the frame is sturdy. It can cost less than buying a comparable new piece and allows for customization, but may not be cost-effective for low-end furniture.

The average cost to reupholster a piece of furniture is around $720, with most projects falling in the $380 to $1,150 range. The final price can vary significantly based on several factors. These include the size and complexity of the furniture, the cost of the new fabric (which typically ranges from $50 to $70 per yard), and hourly labor rates (often $40 to $100 per hour). Additional factors that influence the price are the piece's current condition, its age, whether it needs other repairs, the number of pieces being reupholstered, and your geographic location.

When deciding whether to repair, reupholster, or replace old furniture, consider its age, quality, level of wear, and overall value, including sentimental attachment. In many cases, it is more affordable to reupholster or repair furniture than to replace it, especially for antique, vintage, or discontinued pieces.

Older furniture is often made from durable hardwoods like oak and maple, giving it a longer lifespan than newer furniture, which frequently uses lower-quality materials such as plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF). Because of this, repairing or reupholstering a well-made older piece is often a worthwhile investment.

To determine the best course of action from a financial perspective, compare quotes from local furniture repair services with the price of a new, similar piece. Reupholstery may not be cost-effective for furniture that was originally inexpensive (e.g., under $300). For high-quality or sentimental items, however, it is an excellent way to preserve the piece and extend its life. If you're unsure, a furniture reupholstery specialist can help you evaluate the piece and make an informed decision.

Consider durability, color, texture, room use, and personal style when selecting fabric. Fabrics like linen, cotton, or microfiber offer versatility and strength.
