"I would recommend SAR Construction & Landscaping to anyone who needed these services. They got their work done quickly & followed up on their drywall repair. They also repaired a few other things for me that was not asked in our initial request. I was very grateful."

"Josh Ramirez has been our handyman for multiple projects at multiple properties for well over the past ten years. He and his coworkers have provided excellent carpentry and minor plumbing/electrical services for a wide variety of projects, including but not limited to floor installation, siding repairs, painting, cleaning, tree removal, and preparation/repair of properties being put up for sale. Love the "one stop shopping" expertise he provides. Recommend him without hesitation."

Customers say: True professional

"These men are excellent. They are polite, they show up when scheduled, they do a fabulous job on our lawn. We hope to keep them busy for the long term. A breath of fresh air compared to the lax attitude of other landscaping companies we have hired in the past. Definitely a keeper!"

"I am very happy to have found Brad at Deck It Out. He is truly a professional by the highest standards of the word. From start to finish, he showed up when he said he would, had a sound sense of design and thought about materials and colors I would not have thought of, and attended to all details over and above excellence. I couldn't be happier and will call him again for my next project."

"Painters arrived exactly on time and accomplished all tasks the same day. The manually stripped the deck and applied two coats of stain. They carefully cleaned and then painted the foundation concrete as it had got dirty over the years. They also scraped, caulked and painted a large bump-out window off our living room.

"This company is great to work with! A Cut Above Carpentry is responsive, treats us like were their only customer, and I have yet to have a repair or project they couldn't help with. They've helped us on at least 1/2 dozen different service calls for repairing our rental property and our home. We have had indoor repairs completed [from painting, to tile work, to replacing electrical fixtures] and outdoor repairs [they repaired rotten wood at the windows, replaced roof shingles and trim, repaired my deck, and fixed a water leak]. If they had not discovered the leak and located the source of it we would have had major damage in the Living Room. They repaired a problematic door that my home had for years which may seem like a small issue but I had previously paid other licensed handymen and professional carpenters who had "tried" to fix it on at least 4 different occasions. After having those others come back again and again I had given up. Marty offered to give it a shot and I told him that I did not want to pay to repair it again since I had already paid others hundreds of dollars to fix it in the past. A Cut Above Carpentry was able to fix it when they were there for another repair and did so at no charge! It has now been more than 5 years without a re-occurrence. [In the past the problem popped back up within 2 - 3 months]. My only regret is that in hindsight I wish I had paid them something for that repair since they were the only ones who could fix it right, the first time. These guys are great, there is no detail overlooked from the initial phone call to the repairs to the final billing and the follow up. They even gave me the tax form, and the paperwork to support it, to apply for a energy credit when we had our insulation upgraded - another thing we didn't know we needed. When fixing the water leak from a roof vent they discovered that we had little to no insulation in the attic! The fact that they let me know without pressuring me to fix it immediately gave me the feeling that they had genuine concern for my home, rather than just how much money they could make off of me and my old house. As usual they gave me a reasonable estimate and we had the work done within two weeks (not because they couldn't do it right away but because we had to save for the unexpected repairs). They explained that they took credit cards which was a lifesaver because we determined with winter coming it was very important to do ASAP. So glad we did since it turned out to be one of the coldest winters in years and we made it through with a lower heating bill than the year before. They completed the job in no time - under budget - and left my hallway cleaner than before they began. They are always on time, communicate well, have fair prices, and excellent customer service. Everyone I have worked with is pleasant, professional, and always seem to enjoy their work. I appreciate the accurate estimates so that there are no surprises when the final bi"

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Homeowners should build their floating decks at least 18 inches off the ground. Having it at this height will allow for better airflow underneath and help prevent moisture-related problems like warping or rot. That being said, local guidelines for deck heights may vary depending on where you live.

Yes, adding a composite deck, such as one made from Trex, can significantly increase your home's value. It is a valuable home renovation for recouping costs, with some estimates for return on investment (ROI) ranging between 60% and 70%. More recently, Remodeling's 2024 Cost vs. Value Report suggests a deck addition has an ROI of 82.9%, with an average resale value of nearly $14,600. A new deck makes your yard more functional, enhances the landscape's aesthetic, and can entice prospective buyers. The investment may have a higher return if the deck adds usable square footage to the property.

The best way to sand a deck is by cleaning it, sanding the boards and stairs with 60- or 80-grit sandpaper, and sanding the railings and posts with 80-grit sandpaper. You should sand in the direction of the wood grain to avoid damaging the timber. When sanding your deck, use medium pressure and aim for an even sand. Pressing too hard with a sander can damage decks, as most are softwoods.

It is possible to pressure wash your deck, but it’s usually best to leave the work to a professional for two main reasons. First, power washers are expensive, and you can avoid high upfront costs by hiring a deck washing pro instead. Second, you must be careful to use the correct setting to avoid damaging your deck material. You can only clean soft woods like pine with a wide spray and a low pressure; otherwise, the water will leave unpleasant marks on your deck. Hard woods, composite material, and metal can stand up to increasingly higher water pressures.

When building a deck, #2 grade lumber is a go-to for several reasons. It’s strong, budget-friendly, and works well for most framing and decking needs. But upgrading to #1 or Appearance Grade can give your deck that extra visual edge if you're after a cleaner, more polished look for high-visibility spots.
