I paint cabinets; typically the cabinets that I am painting are wood or melamine, with a laquered surface. I take down the doors and drawer faces and bring them home to spray with shellac primer and Benjamin Moore Aura non-toxic paints. Painting cabinets is a cost-effective way to refresh the kitchen's look, prolong cabinet life, and provide a new aesthetic without the need for full replacement.

Yes, remove the old stain on a cabinet before applying a new coat. To do so, clean the cabinet’s exterior with soap, water, and a damp cloth. Then, use sandpaper or an electric sander to remove the old finish. This allows the new coat of stain to soak into the wood fully, lasting longer and creating a richer color.

The cost to paint kitchen cabinets is $900 on average but can range anywhere from $175 to $3,000 for a large kitchen. You can expect to pay between $3 and $10 per square foot for this project.
