"Hired him to repair crumbling grout at the steps to our entrance. He had forgotten a few spots and left before we could inspect the work. No big deal, he promised to return the next day. He didn't show up but was still paid due to miscommunication with another unit owner. He missed another appointment, and I have been unable to reach him since. He doesn't respond to texts and hasn't answered any of the 15 calls I made over the past two months."

Losing water out of your pool is normal, especially when you have children practicing their cannonballs. Between splashing water out and common evaporation, it's normal to lose some water from your pool. However, if you're losing water rapidly, you might have a pool leak.

Signs of a pool leak include:

  • Excessive lost water not due to splashing

  • Wet spots in the yard 

  • Higher-than-usual water bills

  • Standing water around pool equipment 

  • Algae growth

  • Cracks in or around the pool

It’s a good idea to wait at least 24 hours after opening your pool before you swim in it. Pool opening often involves shocking the water, and the chemical levels need to come down a bit before it’s safe to swim. You can continue testing your water pH and chlorine levels if you’re in a rush. It’s wise to wait until your chlorine levels drop to under four parts per million (ppm) and you have a water pH of between 7.2 and 7.8. You can artificially lower your water pH to speed up the process.

You can use a plunge pool any time of the year, including winter. Be sure to install a pool heater if you plan to take a dip in the plunge pool when temperatures are low to avoid risk of hypothermia. You will also want to add a sturdy pool cover to protect the pool from snow, sleet, and rain during the winter months.

While salt water pools are slightly more expensive to install and run, they offer a better experience with less irritation to the skin, eyes, and even hair. Salt water is also less harsh on swimsuits and pool accessories. As a result, some homeowners feel the extra expense is worth it.
