"East Coast Painting and renovations is a professional company. I would recommend anyone who wants to get their home painted to hire this company. The prices were very fair and I felt the service was exceptional for the price. They came three or four times to check and see if my shingles were dry enough to paint. Most other companies would throw the paint on only to have it bubble up after after a year or so. They did an exceptional job. They covered up all my plants and garden so as not to get any paint on anything. They replaced all the bad wood on the corners of my house as I asked. Brandon returned my texts and calls , always informed me of what they were doing and when they would show up. They always showed up on time. I am very happy with the whole process. I will use them again. I highly recommend this company. 5/29/21"

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Covering your deck with a breathable tarp can protect it from snow, ice, and cold winter temperatures. This is a good winterizing solution if you don’t plan to use your deck at all during the colder months. However, it might be best to skip the tarp if you’ll still be walking on your deck or using it in a limited capacity.

Decks require several inspections during and after the building process, but the specifics vary depending on where you live. Most areas mandate that decks comply with local building codes and safety regulations for the foundation, framing, and structure. Some pros recommend a footing inspection, which verifies the depth, width, and location of the various footings to ensure they offer enough foundational support.

When installing deck boards, screws are generally a better option than nails. Screws offer superior holding strength over time, keeping the boards securely in place. In contrast, nails are more likely to pop out, which can create a tripping hazard. While you can use either, we recommend using 3-inch galvanized deck screws. To minimize the risk of cracking the wood, it's a good practice to drill small pilot holes before driving the screws into the deck joists.

Whether you need a permit depends on the deck design and local regulations. Most areas mandate a building permit if the deck is over a specific height or if it's attached to a pre-existing structure. Shorter, freestanding decks may not require a permit, but you should check with local zoning ordinances and your homeowners association for specifics.

In general, you need a footing at each corner of your deck, and within 8 feet of each other. So, how many you need depends on the size and shape of your deck, plus any local building codes. It also depends on factors like the load capacity of your soil and the weight of your deck. You can find a footing calculator online or contact a pro for support.
