Yes, there are several downsides to installing rain chains. For one, rain chains have a lower flow capacity than a typical gutter and downspout system. A gutter can run 30 to 40 feet without a downspout. Beyond this, water flow efficiency decreases, raising the risk of overflow and damage to the gutter system. Add another downspout or implement a slope toward one end to ensure effective water drainage for runs longer than this.

If you’re replacing your roof, you don’t need to worry about replacing your gutters as long as they’re functional and in good condition. Some roofers may recommend temporarily removing gutters to prevent them from damage during a roof replacement, but the right professional can reduce this risk. Replacing your gutters would only be necessary if your gutters are in bad shape and already need replacing.
